I wonder why you placed this question in the "IMMIGRATION" section. You're referring to the Indigenous People of this land who are by No Means, Immigrants. We were here first ... sorry but, you're actually th immigrant.
As of the 2000 census, there were 4.1 Million U.S. Residence.
1.5 % of the general U.S. population.
There are many various DIALECTS, which vary from tribe to tribe.
How many tribes are there? Not as many as there once were.

GOOD IDEA!! If you remember the wonderful Navajho Indian who was a secret message soldier for the US Military. His language codes, could not be broken by the Japanese. He did a lot for this country. What a good Idea to have Navajho language. Or consider the Norwegian language. When my ancestors came to this shore, they would have been shipped back to Norway had some one demanded that every child in America be made to learn Norwegian. That is a good idea as the Indians were here before any othere culture. Lets all demand to learn Navajho.

I've always thought that American languages need a treatment like books got in Farenheit 451. In California there are 100,000 native speakers, but there are no families using these as their primary tongue.
I think that schools near Indian areas should have language classes just as they do French or Spanish. Maybe even provide extra credit for anthropology.
One scholar has started to produce books with parallel Hopi and English pages.

Choose a Native American language, research it, learn it, speak it. There are many indigenous languages to learn if you wish to. My people have our language taught to our children in the HEADSTART educational program, & the cultural education continues throughout our educational programs. Our culture was nearly wiped out by the government policies of long ago, We survived and so did our languages.
You should find out how manyNative tribes there are in the nation of your birth, What do you actually know of your countries history? Educate yourself. We have.

I gotta disagree with Lakota Bob on this one...I'm not an immigrant. I was born here in the states, that makes me a citizen, NOT an immigrant. I did not immigrate to this country, neither did my parents OR grand parents OR great grandparents or great great grandparents. (any further than that I'm not too sure) But the point is I am a citizen of this country NOT an immigrant.

I agree. If we are told by the self righteous that we need to at least learn another language, why not. There are different dialects and it would be more fun. Are we talking about Canadian or American tribes? There are over 500 Federally recognized Tribes in America. So, lets get to it. Why not assimilate to everyone and live our lives looking through rose colored glasses.. Forget about criminals..

I think we should ask the Indians what they think. And which one we should learn. I might consider that-they were here first. And many wanted to adapted to communicate with all. I trust their wisdom.
I like De Rak answer too.

Screw that! I grew up next to a Lakota reservation and I can't make sense of their language! That's really really hard to learn. Most of their kids can't even speak it, hell they barely speak English, it's far closer to Ebonics. I would rather learn something made-up like Esperanto. That would be fun.
