We feel like we own enough stuff already (and are packed in a small apartment). Also, a lot of the guests will be 25-30, and don't have a lot of extra income to spend.

You could consider asking people to donate to a charity in your name. If you do that, add a note into your invitation. Not ON the invitation. An insert to the invitation. Either provide a charity name and contact or simply have a note asking "Please, no gifts". Or, if you're a lighthearted couple you could make it fun and say "We request you save your money and take us out for drinks when we get back from our honeymoon!" ;)

Otherwise do it word of mouth. Get the word out!

Regardless of what you do, you're still going to get some gifts. It's the same people who refuse to buy gifts from registries or buys everyone the same exact gift. I love that. :)

I've heard of one couple who invited people over to their house for a party, and in the middle of things they stopped everyone and asked them all to be seated because the two of them were going to be married right there. Got around the gifts thing nicely.

Just tell it to them straight...if im strapped for cash and someone says its ok then i take that and run! Or...come up with something they could do for you instead, like bring flowers, candles, photos, cameras to participate in the wedding and give you some sort of gift as well.

I thought that it would be OK to ask money orders but that might be too much for even good friends and family who know your situation.

What about the donation to designated charity? Like Make A Wish Foundation.

When the invitations are sent, enclose a separate card saying "NO GIFTS PLEASE"; but if you want, have them make a small donation instead to a charity of your choice! If people insist on bring gifts, donate them to a shelter, church or reputable social services agency so they can distribute them to people in need....

"In lieu of wedding gifts you are encouraged to donate to the charity of your choice or buy yourself a present. Any wedding gifts we receive will be donated to charity unopened. Your presence is all we desire".

In the invitations, you can put "No gifts, please". Or if, like many couples starting out, you could still use money, say in the invitations, "There will be a money tree at the reception, but please no gifts."
