I discovered that I cannot tandem walk while at the neurologist's office. This was one of many tests he performed.

Tandem walk is ability to walk with one foot in front of the other, like when the police pull you over and test for drunk driving.

I realize a Doctor would probably have to answer this question but I'm dying to find out why I can't tandem walk.

Tandem walking is a test of co-ordination and balance. It is usually used to assess function in the cerebellar system (which co-ordinates balance).

However, if you are weak for other reasons, have poor sensation in your feet so that you can't tell where your feet, are dizzy and several other things this can also cause difficulty with tandem walking.

It is impossible to answer the question in isolation I'm afraid... your neurologist will interpret the result of your tandem walk in the context of the rest of your history and full neurological examination, and draw conclusions from that. However, the only general conclusion that can be drawn is that it is likely to be a balance problem.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but that is the nature of medicine - you never draw any major conclusion from just one test.

Erm..
Possibly more discription about how exactly you can't...
Does it hurt when you try to do it, is it just hard to maneuver or balance, does your body not respond.

Depending on your weight too- If it hurts and you cant move- I'd say it's a hip problem. Or your legs are too short (No it can happen- haha- I have like the shortest damn legs ever- they're not huge- but I CANNOT cross my legs lady-like...knee over the other- I have to cross bow legged because one leg can't go up so high with my hips...

Working on balance, lay on your back (on a matt or blanket) and have one leg flat, and the other leg up to your knee, and try and cross over and touch the matt with your knee...so for example, your right knee- roll your hips just a bit and reach over and touch your right knee just beside your left leg- wherever it may hit.
Try standing up and holding one leg up, and then slowly release it- stretching it more each time...

Try stretching your hips more- butterflies...foot to foot, puling your legs in towards your pelvic area...

If your leg just won't move then yeah maybe you have nerve damage...

You may have to pay attention for awhile. When I start a puppy out, I walk with a big, wide stride so that I keep bumping the dog over when they get too close. If she is plain getting in front of you, give her a leash correction. Good luck!

Balance and neurological issues. i can't do it anymore either. I have verterbobasilar TIAs and my inner ears are a mess. But, you will need to let your neurologist to decide what is going on.

It is sometimes a symptom of MS or a neurological disorder.
