how would u explain to a 10yr old what gay means?

my son is ten years old and asking ?'s about how do people turn gay how do i go about explaining this to him without telling him way to much?

by saying that people don't 'turn' gay. that love is love and it shouldn't matter whether it is male/male or female/female. please don't encourage discrimination at such a tender age. my mother had me afraid of women with short hair who wore flannel shirts..lol she told me they would hurt me bad. i am a lesbian and i am honest with my neices and nephews when they ask questions like that.

Does your child have a gender dysphoria? Ask him. Ask him if he has characteristics that make him act different than some boys. like do they call him a sissy or have they? This is a separate issue than being gay. Some children are born with a gender dysphoria and some have learned characteristics causing this. You can see the difference in desires the child has. Often if born in the child, the child wants to be the opposite gender, and the child with a learned gender dysphoria often does not want to be the opposite gender. These children are often teased at school and told they are gay. Children call each other that a lot, a slang term. Kids use it even before they know what it means.

I am glad your son feels comfortable talking with you about such an issue. You could say that if someone calls someone gay it is not proper, it is like a cuss word. There are some people that do different things than most people in society do. Yes when a boy likes a boy or a girl likes a girl. Like a girlfriend or boyfriend. Then be sure to ask him why he asks because a child could be coaxing him into trying things or an older child could be baiting him.

Just tell him that gay is when a man wants another man to be his boyfriend. No one really knows what makes a person gay. Recent research suggests a large component is present at birth but there are twins where one is gay and the other not, so it can't all be from before birth. I would also mention that teens often have a crush on someone of the same sex but don't wind up being gay. He may worry that if he likes a friend "too much" that he was born gay and is "doomed".
