I caught some **** breaking into my car last night. Should I have
A: called the police and sat for 2 hours filling out a crime report
B: Beat the living crap out of him.
I realize in the eyes of the law only one is correct but what do you think is the most effective crime prevention method.

Totalitarianism. The old Gulag system seemed to work enviably well.
Either that, or perhaps they could adapt the Yahoo! Answers points system as some sort of incentive to make the known offenders behave themselves.
Otherwise, I don't know. I once found a burglar in my own home. It kept half a dozen police officers off the streets for days with paperwork and forensic tests, and nothing happened, despite their being able to match the little c*nt's fingerprints in their database. I dare say it will be "taken into account" next time they give him community service. Meanwhile, I still haven't finished paying for the damage.

No brainer...
A: Call the police, after you C: detain the perp, with whatever force necessary (call it "Citizen's Arrest" until the authorities arrive)--- AND. spend the time filling out a crime report.
If you want your accusations to stick, ya gotta make a paper trail. Document and authenticate. Tell the whole story. Avoid violence when possible, especially when it's a knee-jerk emotional reaction, even if you are tempted to the max. Only choose B as a last resort...and, then, only as a time-filler til the cops get there.
There is no SINGLE solution or instant resolve to anything in life. You need to develop a sense of good judgement for the circumstances at hand, and often that means choosing a course of action involving several options. Don't limit yourself to A or B. Hopefully, you won't choose actions that make you look worse than the criminal who wronged you.

Surely forcefully removing the crap from him would be the best prevention (and most satisfying) method. But in this day and age, just make sure you can handle the repercussions. Seems lowlife like this arent afraid of police really...see it as a badge of honour to get in trouble with the law.

"Beat the living crap out of him."..., I know of one guy that was a tai kwando master who "restrained" a burglar while the police arrived. The burglar had the householder done for assault !There might not be enough police about, but try to help out by doing a "citizens arrest" and you are knackered.
I read the other morning that 1 in every 4 house burglaries are due to people not locking their doors when they go out. I keep my front door and back doors locked when I am IN my house, let alone when I am out .

Maybe if it was safe to detain him, but you never know what there are on (usually some class A drug).
Police probably would class it as low priority and not catch him.
