Yahoo answers have a good thing going, but there is always someone who can't ask or answer a question without being so cruel.

This is true Sue, i do not know why all the nasty people are nasty,
i think arrogance, maybe, and a need to be superior or create the illusion of "superiority" What is really interesting, is that MOST,, not all, but most are genuinely very good people and do mean well,
Unfortunately, some people, thru life struggles, de-sensitise themselves from really being compassionate, as to the family and loved ones they are, but to strangers, and those who are not as accomplished they have a wall up... not with the intention to hurt, or belittle some of us, yet being selfish in sharing "plain old niceness"

So, what can you do, other than try to overlook some remarks, and take any good info they may offer, and try not to take it too personal,
Haven't you heard the saying : ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW THEM, (WHOEVER THEM IS), they are really nice people,
Too bad some people wait for a special ocassion to be kind, and it is not off the top.

Just you stay sweet, and considerate, and enjoy the fun and charming people who have no need to insult, or make fun of others,
don't let the bad guys, live rent free in your head,

ps i have been nasty with a few people i thought were jerks, vulgar, or cruel, and then i realilze i am not much better than them if i communicate the same,,
but i forgive lmyself and go on.

It is a place where opinions can roam free. Ofcourse you can report them, or ignore them, and there are different levels of what many people consider nasty or cruel. Some say that others are reported just for asking a valid, proper question (without all the usual rudeness), just becuase they don't like the subject.

I think that if you reveal too much personal info to anybody, some people will take that as an invitation to judge, and be rude to you. Most people would not, but some people are ignorant ***holes, who don't have anything better to do than harrass people. Sad but true. So it's your job to protect yourself from people like that by not revealing things about yourself in your questions or answers that are too personal. That way you keep things light, and the bullies out there won't have any ammo to use against you.

there will always be people who don't like other people's guts even if they can't see the person, so generally they tend to speak ill or badly. Some ask those questions because they have issues with themselves. some answer cruelly as you say because the answer is very obvious or that the question is kind of stupid or something to have asked that question.

Some people just like to be cruel to other people because they feel they're powerful or great or better than other people even though they aren't or shouldn't.

It's such a turn off to read a thread only to find nasty, insulting or racist remarks. That negative attitude does nothing but to show them up as mean spirited individuals..lacking in class, maturity and wisdom.

Obviously, they must constantly feel sorry for themselves thus the need to make others feel as miserable as what they are. Behavior such as theirs is no isolated incident, so you can imagine the problems they are causing themselves in real life not just on the internet.

I can't add much more that hasn't already been said, ie. the need to belittle and bully others to raise oneself up.

As for the free speech remark - one can express their own opinion in a civilized and non-threatening manner. Free speech is hardly an excuse to be uncivil, rude and nasty. This excuse is given far too often.

because Yahoo doesn't back up it's own rules. If they did those people would have their answers deleted and get tired of it and go away. The best thing to do is ignore them as best as you can.

Thank you! I can try to word my questions in a mature, practical way and I still get harassed by people constantly. Look out for the user "Flachic." She always insults people, including me. I guess people just have to slam other people to boost their own self esteem.

I ask myself the same thing.
Earlier today I asked a question and someone's response was rude and insulting to me.
