Get some books to teach you. Listen to Mexican Radio stations, watch the Spanish television, only use Spanish with your family, and hang out with people who speak Spanish at your school and speak with them all day. The only way to learn a language quickly is to be fully immersed in it. But, you really don't have to worry... people generally are exchange students to help them learn the language, not so they can learn about the culture. She or he will want your help learning English, not to speak Spanish with you all the time.

I suppose watching TV programe in Spanish could help you a little. It helped me. On the other hand, you don't have much time. Try finding a dictionary with some basic words needed for the communication. Good luck!

If don´t speak spanish at all...it would take a long time...so you can learn some words that are important...like:
Hola--->hello
adios--->bye
por favor--->please
gracias---> thanx
cuanto cuesta---> how much does it cost?(food or souvenirs)
donde esta el baño----> where is the toilet?
you can always look up in a spanish manual for beginers
now if you can speak a little and you understand the basics the best you can do is read some (easy) books in spanish or watch spanish movies. ^-^
buena suerte!!! (good luck! haha i am from latin america so i speack perfectly spanish ^-^)

Sounds impossible. A week is not enough to understand him.
You can try to pick up some basic things at http://www.phrasebase.com . It's not going to be easy...
i think you two will have to learn the basics of each other's language while he is there.

course or privet lessons - the best way...then you should watch many movies and read books in that language...after a year you could say most simple things.
