grossly racist story about something they did or said, believe they're not racist? And why do they think that other people want to listen to their "stories?"

Racism is something to be ashamed of..and even the racists know it!
So even the racists like to claim their are not..that is why they say the are not racist or have a black friend etc....

They start a story like that to make it look like they aren't racist but in reality they are. If they were not racist they could say the same story but without any mention of what race was involved. As to why people listen to their stories, I have found that most people are racist on some level. And I did not get what womanwhoreads meant either. lol

Because they have a story they want to tell and they know the crux of it is based on a difference between themselves and the other person.

People who start stories/questions with "I'm not racist but..." or "I'm not sexist but..." or "I'm not homophobic but..." probably are just that. If they weren't they wouldn't be mentioning the story.

I think it's perfectly cool to ask questions about other cultures, gender, religions, etc. in a respectful way. If you want to know if there's truth to certain stereotypes (not prejudices but stereotypes), you should be able to ask that. We can only get closer to people different from us by being able to communicate freely and respectfully.

You can ask a question two different ways and be respectful one way or sound racist the other way:

I'm not racist but why is it that everytime someone is late to class or a meeting they're Black?

OR you can ask

Is there any truth behind the stereotype that Black people are usually late?

People asking it the first way have shown that they are aware of and agree with a prejudice about another group of people and they have closed their eyes to accepting that other people in their same group could have the same characteristic.

It's just a crappy way to try and cover up that they are racist. It's almost like they're saying "I'm not racist but I'm about to tell you a story about something that a Black person did to me today. But if it were a White person who did it, there would be absolutely no story for me to tell. But I'm gonna tell you anyway because I want to be spreading that word that you need to steer clear of the Blacks." LOL (Hopefully it's obvious that I don't agree with that statement...)

I think they want to tell the stories in the hope that someone else will say, "I know! That happened to me too!" Because if they get that reaction, then they feel that they can't possibly be racist. If So-And-So Atmavah said the same thing, they can't possibly have a problem. Which, kinda answers the first part of the question.

Because they are racist and they want to keep the hatred going and going. One day people will start to push back and I fear there may be a civil war right here in the US.which would lead to this nation being declared a police state. All will suffer because a few just had to hate!

well I'm not a bigot but.....
Yeah it is sad, especially when they get all righteous about it. And it doesn't even matter what colour they are. I have more respect for a blatant rabid biggot than for the ones who want to be acceptable and still have the attitude of racism cloaked in patriotism, or religion. Nothing is worse than a racist wrapped in a flag holding up a cross in my opinion.

And I don't care if it is about skin, country, religion or dietary preferences. bigotry sucks.

Because by starting out that way, they are trying to convince themselves they are not racist.Yet they continue to tell these stupid racist stories. So by saying , " I 'm not racist... but", is confirming to themselves everything is fine now I can go ahead and say whatever the heck I want to.

I hate that!

There's a really racist joke circulating on the internet about black people and Hurricane Katrina. One of my "friends" sent it and title it "Warning, not politically correct." As if saying that then makes it ok to say any horrible thing they want.

In my experience - because they're white south efricans, unwelcome everywhere else, and unlike my friends, no one has iver firmly (and calmly, confidently) said to them "Yes, you are."

Try taking them to a show where there is one guy onstage whose every second word is rude and contains four letters. They will Love it! It is So Banned and naughty and illegal!
