I know legal immigrants with a green card that dont even know english and dont assimilate the american culture. But in the other hand, I know illegal immigrants that do know english and do assimilate the american culture. Being american is a way of life, not just having a piece of paper.

I agree with fox , volleyballchick and mrchilli, I think that every one should have to speek english in this country, I feel that we should not have to learn every other language in this world to drive our kids to school, we do not get paid enough to learn other languages in this county to speak it . Not knowing the language is not a good thing because some kids think we do not know what is being said and they say bad things to the people that do not understand the language. I understand many of the things , and I donot understand this . It causs alot of fights

1st, I DON'T think that to be an 'American' is having a piece of paper! In fact, anyone born in Mexico, Brazil or Argintina is an 'American'! Now being a bonafide US citizen is another kettle of fish! I'm born & raised in Illinois, hence even with the loss of my birth certificate, [anutta piece of paper] my authenticity is related to my upbringing in a Christian enviroment with a state sponsored education in the 'spirit' of the founding fathers of the United States.
What is up your bottom to worry about such an issue? Are you self conscientious of being 'illegal', 'illigitimate' or merely 'insecure'? The piece of paper from any where besides the USA is, in my mind, completely useless! I've made my blessings 'ligit' by the way I've lived: volunteering for military service during time of conflict & paying all kinds of dues throughout my life.
I speak no other languages & have traveled extensively throughout the free world. The pros & cons of the issue of 'illegals' in any country are debated widely but facts remain justified to 'discriminate' ligitimately against 'unlawful', 'unfair' & 'deceptive' practices everywhere.
The arguement of 'a piece of paper' holds true about marriage too but I don't think it makes it 'ligit' for same sex relationships. What's the good of a marriage certificate if the parties don't 'love' each other?
You're giving me a headache! I'll jes take my 2 pts w/only 25 more questions til the next level! Wot's yer question/point?

Well, in a COURT OF LAW, said piece of paper is what is needed to be a legal US citizen. So if the english-speaking, assimilated ones don't have it, off they go. . .

It's also part of being an American to respect the laws of the land. If you can't do that, then why do you want to be here??

Having a green card doesn't make you American, it makes you a resident. Being a citizen makes you American. But you are right, unless you are American in your heart, even that isn't enough to do more than let you take benefits.

If we could figure out who really loved this country and wanted to be American, I'd throw out my logical economic based reasons and go with that. However, there is simply no way, so we have to judge those with skills, etc.. We have to take in only a limited number without investment, education or particular skills, because those people take out more in cost of education and services than they pay in taxes, and too many is too expensive.

We just can't take everyone. Our schools are already failing.

Being an American also means you respect the county and its laws. The fact they are ILLEGAL immigrants proves they do not have this respect and choose not to obey our laws. Therefore, they are not American, until they are legal.

I don't have any "piece of paper" stating I'm an American citizen, unless you concider my voter registration card.

But even so, it's not concidered "papers."
