This is a very big subject.
Lets first of all cover the how. The Dali Lama recomends that several sessions of ten minutes, every day, are more beneficial than an hour every couple of days. So, if you have ten minutes spare, you can take advantage of the time.
Sit in a relaxed position, with your spine straight, get comfortable and determine that you will not move for ten minutes. Now watch your breath. Concentrate as you breathe in, and then as you breathe out. Feel the movement of air through the top of the nostrils. Inevitably, after a few minutes, you will lose concentration, and the monkey mind will kick in and take you away somewhere. Never mind. As soon as you realise what has happened, then pull yourself back, and continue to concentrate on the breath. It sounds easy, and it is, as long as you are aware that concentrating for ten minutes is almost impossible at first. Once you can do this for ten minutes, then you can lengthen the period.
The benefits are manifold, but initially it will enable you to take greater control of your mind and to apply it to beneficial thoughts in a deeper manner.
There are many other forms of meditation which you will come across once you have started., and eventually you will learn, after examining your thoughts, exactly why you think the way you do, and in the process you will reveal many things to yourself which had been previously hidden.
The answers to everything can be found by going within.

Meditation has only benefits. It should be done in a quiet place usually in the mornings or evenings before dinner. It can be done in several different manners. There is the Yogic meditaion which is more intense. Many people practice Transcendental Meditaion. General meditiation is the best. 15 to 20 minutes to begin with and then you can increase as you get used.
I do it while sitting on the floor with my legs stretched out. I lean against the wall and just relax and let my thoughts go. At first it is difficult because you wil be bombarded with thoughts and there will always be disturbance. You will also have the urge to get up and do something. As time goes by the thoughts die down and you will relax (be careful not to go to sleep). It is a very peaceful feeling. I don't like repeating the so-called mantras or whatever. It has no advantage. I believe in letting my mind go. Don't hold on to thoughts. If it comes, don't dwell on it. Sometimes you get disturbing thoughts or something that happened in your life a long time ago will pop up. It may stay with you for a while. Don't try to analyse it or hold on to it.

During meditating you keep yourself away from the world's leisure and you have direct liaison with the God. Meditation helps you to improve your inner self and remain attached to the supreme power. All your sorrows and sufferings are taken care by the God when you fully surrendered to Him. You come out and remain clean and will be saved to commit all kinds of wrong deeds in your life. The temptation of evils thoughts will vanish and you remain fresh like flowers at all times. The meditation is a path to salvation. To meditate, you need to search a real Guru who will be able to teach you other details of meditation. Good Luck.

The whole aim of meditation is,
1. to calm your mind, and
2. to focus the mind on one thing.
The mind of a normal person is like an uncontrolled monkey jumping from one thought to another. To process all these thoughts a lot of body energy is used. Thus if your mind cease to process thoughts you will be saving a lot of body energy which can be used to cure a lot of ailments in your body. That is why a person who continues to meditate regularly even gets a nice body complexion.
Anapana or concentration on the breath is the best form of meditation.
If you sit down and close your eyes you will notice that your mind is jumping from one thought to another. Even though you want to concentrate on your breath you will find other thoughts also coming in between.
In learning to meditate you must first learn to calm your mind. You do this by following every thought that comes into you mind. You must be like a Manager of a Hotel who stands at the entrance and observes the customers coming in. Without getting attached to the thoughts try to observe them. You will find that a thought comes in and that it goes nowhere and another thought follows it - try following that too - with same results. This way you will find that your thoughts gradually subside. Do not try to force out your thoughts.
Of course do not expect results in one or two days. Practise it for at least 40 minutes every day for at least 2 months you find that you have 'killed' your train of thoughts. I have practised for nearly 2 years and still vagrant thoughts come in.
Thereafter start concentrating on your breath. Notice the breath coming in and going out. You should not concentrate only on the tip of your nose. Notice the breath coming in and thereafter your lungs getting filled and then gradually exhaling the breath.
After you finish that for the day start to think of a person or several persons whom you hate most. Having those people in mind start to think in a compassionate manner "may he be healthy, may he be happy, may he go up in life, may he live long". Keep on doing this for about 10 minutes a day for a few months you will find that you do not get angry even when you have to get angry.
You should be able to get some guidance from the following sites,

oh yes some of us get nuts, because it is manipulate body system and organizer. you may get sickness that no doctor know where it comes from too.....
try to know and aware that you are breathing, all the time, (simple but hard).
and then, lower the pace of breathing
do meditate when you are happy or relaxed, not to archieve it,
meditation amplifies your feeling and psychological state,

I have been reading about meditation for years now yet I have never attempted it. The reason why I have not done it is because I know in my heart it is real and how do you come back after gaining that kind of insight? You would never be the same again. I'm not ready to change yet, I dig booze, food, and whores.
