I saw a documentary on this too, and having had braces and worked in the Dental industry, I think that removing teeth isn't always the best option. I don't think you mean made the head thinner, generally removing teeth makes the dental 'arch' smaller and leads to smaller, less plump lips.

There is a strain of Orthodontistry that focuses on early expansion of the jaw to allow for all the teeth to fit and giving a much better profile and lip line.

I wish I knew about this before I had teeth removed to have my braces, as I believe that I would have a plumper top lip if I'd kept the teeth. As it is though I do like my nice straight teeth, so ultimately it depends on the result you are aiming for.

I had braces for about 3 years. I was about 11 when I got them and they didn't pull out any permanent teeth just the 2 baby teeth I had left. Before they put my braces on I had to have a "jaw spreader" for my upper jaw. Apparently my upper jaw was underdeveloped and I would eventually have an underbite. It was like a permanent retainer with a keyhole in the middle of it. My parents would crank it twice a day and it slowely expanded my jaw. I wore it for 6 months.

Today I think my smile is almost perfect and I'm really glad I went through all that turmoil and pain to get my great smile. I also use whitening strips and get a lot of compliments on my beautiful teeth. If I didn't have all that orthodontic work I can't even imagine what I'd look like.

RESEARCH this point very well! I was the only child of 5 that had the palette expander instead of tooth extraction. The dentist told me that due to the nature of my facial structure if he extracted teeth on me my face would fall in a little as I got older and would make me look older. This made sense to me and I worshipped the ground he walked on.

However, now that I am in my 40's with crooked teeth I went to an orthodontist who told me that the palette expander is not for everyone and was a fad back then as an alternate way to do things. He feels (his opinion) that if I had teeth extracted my teeth would still be straight (like my sibs). He told me if he were to put braces on me now he would have to extract 4 teeth to make room for all the crowding.

He DID put a palette expander on my son and it worked great but he told me that this is because my son is a total candidate, very narrow palette with a cross bite.

NOW for the past month a VERY strange phenomenan is happening, now that I am without dental insurance. My teeth feel as it they are moving forward and becoming buck. At 48!!! My upper teeth are cutting into my upper lip and my whole bite feels strange and I have a strange feeling of awareness of my bite and teeth movement. I'm going to be asking about this in a Question post for myself.

All I can say is really research it yourself thouroughly and get multiple orthodontic opinions whether to expand or pull. No one likes to pull, but if it's necessary, it's necessary. However, if it can save you from pan face as you age, it's also worth a million to do the right thing.

Let me know what the 3 orthodontic opinions tell you.

Yes, I had braces in high school. I had four teeth extracted. But you can't even tell, because the spaces eventually closed between them. Don't worry, they know what they are doing. I went to a large university to have mine done, and I guess my results were awesome. I'm in some textbook or something:)

I have braces and had one tooth taken out a month before I actually got braces on, now it has grown big enough (it was a baby tooth) to put a bracket thing on it this coming month.

It does feel wierd with a hole in your mouth and braces, especially when you can feel that wire right there.

I had braces and I had 4 teeth removed. I didn't know your head could get thinner but one doctor told me my jaw was unaligned, I think it is due to having had braces.

I had 4 teeth removed and never experienced anything like this. It prevents crowding and helps your overbite I think.
