Because I've read about it a few times and even seen a show on the discovery channel. Apparently everytime the church needed followers they make Hell more gruesome so evenb less people want to "risk it". Another question, knowing this, why the hell would this convert anyone to any religion? It is obvious that it was man made to get more people under the churches belt back when they could use that power to manipulate the government, "Do what I say or I'll excommunicate your *** real good." Come on now.

And the kicker:

Eventually it got too scarey and people said "Screw this, I'm gonna be a Hindu." (I realize not literally). So the church was like damn, we need them back, let's find a way to make it scarey but give hope. Oh, I know, let's add purgatory.

vicsikix, I feel really sorry for Jesus, there's no question that he was a good man and believed he died for my sins. In reality this did nothing more than waste a good life. I'd give him back his life for my supposed part of his dying if I could, but I can't and it's too bad.

Dan you hit the nail on the head with that question. There is NO hell, That is one of the parts of the bible that is false. There are many truths in the bible don't get me wrong, but there is alot of things in it that just is not so.

Well, somewhere where to fire never stops and there will be a gnashing of teeth is pretty bad. All you have to do is descibe said place a little more vividly and you have a scarier legitimate interpretation of hell.

imsweet is wrong. The grave and hell are talked about in the bible using different words.

Purgatory is a word in the bible, Latin for "through fire" from the passage "saved as if through fire." Which basically points to a place where people will be cleansed before entering heaven.

People LOVE being scared, and Dantes Inferno hit the spot especially when described by a really good fire and brimstone preacher. Versions of hell usually describe the worst weather in an area multiplied many times.

Forget what you "learned" about it on the discovery channel. Pick up a Bible and read about it there. Jesus talked about Hell more than He did Heaven. He didn't die to save you from your sins for no reason. No, it's not a scare tactic just to get more followers. Check this out:

Hell is not mentioned at all by Jesus in the bible. The idea of hell started in the middle ages, the Christian glory days of burning witches and murdering Jewish children

More people started showing up to church during the Renaissance the more "firebrand" the pastor was - kind of like getting your jollies out of going to horror movies.
