Long Beach City College Fire Science Dept. departments.lbcc.edu/deptinfo.cfm?deptabbr=FIRE

Courses cost $26 per unit. You can get CalGrants to cover tuition and even some living expenses if you take a minimum number of units.

My cousin did the Fire Science program at Valley College in San Bernardino. Initially he had some difficulty getting a full time position because he was young and inexperienced. You have to be 21 to actually drive the truck, so depts. tend to only hire 21+ people. Until he turned 21, he mostly got seasonal work, but this gave him experience and contacts and when he turned 21, he had no problem getting a job.

I think it took him 2 or 3 semesters to complete the program going half time. I'm sure it's similar at Long Beach.
