Actually Mary was supposedly promised to Joseph. So this merely makes her and Yahweh fornicators instead of adulterers, which is why both Jews and Moslems consider this notion blasphemous. All great men were born of the mating of gods and virgins in Greco-Roman times. Julius Caesar was the product of Zeus ravishing his mother in the temple. Heracles was the son of Zeus also as was Perseus, etc. etc. Since the early church evolved in Greek cultural settings they had to have their leader be born of a god and a virgin too just to keep up with the Jones. Of course rabbinical sources say Mary was left with child by a Roman soldier named Panteras and Joseph married her to prevent her being stoned to death as a fornicator. The earliest Gospel, i.e. Mark makes no mention of any of this, so it's later addition seems like artistic license to me, as does the phoney Behtlehem birth and massacre story to make Jesus a modern Moses figure. For all we know Joseph and Mary are fictional characters and Jesus' origins before his baptism and ministry are unmentioned in Mark because they were unknown.

*chuckles* The relationship between Mary and Joesph doesn't compaire to modern relationships. The relationship they had was one more deeper and intimate than being engaged, yet less than full marriage.
Joseph was pissed, actually he was embarassed and "seeked to put Mary away quietly"- he actually wanted to divorce her. God sent down an Angel, who essentially told Joseph "Dude, God is the Kids Father, you're the earthly father, and this kids gonna save the entire human race- or at least those who believe in him"
Joseph wasn't too thrilled with this- the social stigma of the day would have been profound embarassment. But it all turned out good in the end, they got married, had other kids- James, who was Jesus's younger brother wrote the book of James is a good example.
Now, *Chuckles* Lets talk about his bride being "under age"? Who said she was under age? According to who?
If you actually study history you will see that most of history was written by teenagers, believe it or not!
Average life exptectancy in Jesus's time was about 27- Jesus died around the age of 33, unmarried.
In the American "Old West" it was NORMAL for girls to get married at age 14 to 16, to have between 6 and 9 kids, and be dead by the age of 45 if they were lucky.
Men, ironically lived somewhat longer because they didn't have the complications of child birth.
Joan of Arc- burned at the stake at the age of 16.

Mary got around BUT she knew people,
said the Born again Virgin, which was an improvement as I hated being called the world's first living abortion.
Also didn't she already have kids by then?
I forget what the neighbors said and hate to bother the big guy
what with King George running around keeping him busy.

The bible states that Joseph was hurt and upset about it at first.
But being a rightous man (believer in GOD, not sinless) he was going to send her away instead of publically humiliating her and having her stoned to death, as was the custom at that time.
Then he received a dream from God, telling him what happened and why Mary was pregnant. From that point on Joseph went and took Mary as his wife and cared for her and all their children until his death (which is not mentioned in the bible).

Which begs the question. If it wasn't God (great cover story) and it wasn't Joseph, then who was it. That would be one of the greatest historical mysteries of all time to find out that someone else was Jesus' biological father.
Too bad they didn't have DNA testing back then. It could have changed things entirely.

hahahahaha that's if you take it literally. i shouldnt think it was meant to mean that god actually had sex with mary, but that the spirit that entered the baby body of christ was sent from god with a mission.
if i was a christian that is the way i would interpret it, however a lot was lost in the translation of the bible and a lot was censored. So what you have is a book created rather than a detailed account of people's diaries.

Back then, it was alright to stone your new bride to death, even if you found out she was not a virgin...but with child? That was HUGE! I do wonder why Joseph didn't have a vision too, because it sure would have helped their marriage.

Joseph was visited by an Angel and told what was going to happen. He had a choice of whether or not to go ahead with the wedding. He made his choice.

You obviously don't know the story well. Read in Matthew 1:19-25 Read that and you will see that he was not happy about it, until God came to him in a dream and let him know what was going on.

I find it so hard to believe in biogenesis (ya, know like chemicals aggregating to form micelles.), but a wizard impregnanting a virgin is easy to buy. Let's not mention the use of fables.
