The chemicals in topical flea treatments like Advantage or Frontline interfere with the fleas nerve impulses....they "short circuit" their nervous system. This is why the fleas go kind of crazy before they die...they are having what can be compared to a stroke. This is what makes these two products so safe...dogs and cats don't have flea nervous systems (mammals nervous systems work very differently). And they don't get absorbed into their bloodstream. Other products that contain permethrins and pyrethrins are actually poisons that poison the fleas, and sometimes the cat or dog too! Stay away from them. The worst ones are Biospot and other Hartz brands.

Well it works mainly to repel bugs and if its a good brand even kill them and their larva if you apply after some have got on your dog. In basic terms its a posion to bugs.

I would recomend washing ones hands after petting any dog just for hygine purposes.
