I think the reason why many Americans think Brazil speak Brazilian and not Portuguese is because many of them say they speak American and not English (no kidding... it is what I've heard!).
It is actually hard to believe that in a country where the research in all fields is so rich, elementary schools leave kids in the complete ignorance of what the world is. Maybe they know about their country (and that is just a maybe!), but... they are isolated from the rest. That's my opinion.

Patricia,
Brazil was conquered by the Portuguese
who were at that time even more powerful
navigators than the Spanish. There were
many wars between the Spanish and Portuguese
as to whom would get what in the new world,
and that is when the Catholic Church interfered
and gave Brazil to Portugal.
That's it is a nutshell, and no, it is not a weird question.
Also, the Brazilian Portuguese, to my taste, is more
beautiful than the original Portuguese.
As well, for some reason, it is extremely easy for
Portuguese (especially Brazilians) to learn to speak
Spanish, but not so the other way around. It is harder
for a Spanish speaker to learn Portuguese.
Interesting, no?

Well everyone basically speaks Portuguese, but a lot speak Spanish as well because Brazil is surrounded by Spanish speaking countries and the two languages are so similar. They speak Portuguese there because people from Portugal were the people who discovered and settled in Brazil. Yup...

Portugese its acctually the brazilian's language, so almost everyone in brazil speaks portugese. They speak portugese because they were conquered by Portugal. Like U.S.A. was conquered by england, they speak english, and like Venezuela, Colombia, etc, were conquered by the spanish people, so they speak the language from the country that conquered them.

Portuguese may have originated from north east Spain hundreds of years ago ....It is an influential language having affected even the Japanese language as brought to them from Spanish missionaries a long time ago ...
As you know , Spain was a great nation of explorers and those men and clergy along with the Spanish Conquistadors , spread their language and customs in the beautiful country of Brazil ..........PS. Man can the Brazilians play soccer !
