I am uniquely qualified to answer this question because I was in a coma and have tried living without antidepressants. I hated getting up in the morning because I never knew what my behavior would be like. I had horrible mood swings. I grew up in 7 foster homes, 6 different cities and 12 schools. I never knew any stability. In 1989 I was introduced to Prozac and that has made the difference. I am a born again Christian and I have come to see my depression the way one views diabetes. I don't feel the need to prove anything to anyone or apologize for needing them. I am just glad that the Lord gave me a way out. If you are struggling with depression, ignore the stigma attached to taking antidepressants and give it a chance. If you find its not for you, you can always get off of them. :)

I do not think you understand what depression and anti-depressants are all about. If you understood either one of these two matters, you would not choose a "coma." Perhaps you should visit NIH.org and read up on depression. It is one of the leading causes of juvenile and senior suicides.
While it is true that most people have heard of the side effects of many anti-depressants, most do not seem to be aware of what depression does to anyone who has suffered it on a regular basis. For those of us who have suffered depression, it is well worth the "side effects" to have a normal life. No one who has had the ups and downs from depression to normal thinking and back again would agree with you.

I know there is some contivercy about anti deoressents, but comming from someone who is suffering from depression. It is not someething you can control or something you can just forget about. It's you. It's a disease. no one wants to be depressed. but you cant stop it. you would not tell someone with luekemia to stop taking medicine because it might not help or there might be side effects. Any foreign object you put in your mouth has side effects, but usully the rewards outway the risks. I doant know what i would do with out my medicine. I am happy again and can funtion with my family, job and friends. Think of it like this. If you had a constant headach, something you could not control and never went away and someone came out with a pill to get rid of it, whould't you take it?

Medication isn't the cure for depression. Consider it a tool to help stabilize your mood. It's not to make you happy or sad, rather more consistant so that your recovery is more successful. The individual has be willing to take the appropriate actions such as talking about their problems, and incremental steps to solve them. My personal experiance, is that it helped me sleep and become more focused, so that I could pursue the needed changes. Symptoms regarding depression are commonly overlooked or misunderstood.
