I'd rather get to know the person before I start dating them- that way, I already am comfortable around them. I am a very private person and I don't open myself completely to someone as we first start dating- so, in my opinion, be friends- you get to know them enough to decide if your willing to make a committment to them

If you cut to the chase, you have no solid basis of anything comfortable and familiar so If you really think this person is someone you want to make an impression on and they seem like they want a SERIOUS relationship, then cutting to the chase may turn them off, because it may seem to that you only want them for what you can get, and then once you get it, you are going, going...gone.
however if you are FRIENDS first...if you find it hard to keep it friendly then...THEN CUT TO THE CHASE!

I've always interpreted "freinds first" is a euphemism for "no sex on the first date." I wouldn't treat a woman I was courting as a friend, a potential romantic parter deserves much better! I try harder, am more considerate, flexible, and forgiving than I would be with ordinary friends. Courtship is a higher plane, so to speak. If you try to be "friends first" the romantic tension is quickly lost, resulting in the awkwardness of trying to hold hands with one of your "gal pals" of many years.

Depends what you're after...
For intense, physical flings, the mystery of the other person can make it fun.
But if you're on the market for a serious relationship, it's better to get to know the other person so you're not just making a dating decision based on surface attraction. Just don't wait too long -- once you're in a comfortable friendship, it can be hard to switch to romance.

i think cutting straight to the chasd. the fun and exciting thing bout dating someone if finding out and learning who they are and whether or not you actually like them. being friend first kind of removes this step. and all there is to build with is sex and commitment.
