I was given a camera that has a "70-300mm 1:4-5.6 macro" lens. I am trying to determine what this lens is best used for. What are it's characteristics?

That is a very versatile lens. It can zoom from just a little above the "normal" 50mm length to a really tight telephoto that makes it look like you are much closer to the subject than you really are, And the marco part means you can get close to things and get a lot of detail. This is a good all-purpose lens for anything except panoramic landscapes. Enjoy!

This is a very good general purpose lens, if you don't already have a fast 35mm, I would get one. With these two lens, you should be able to take a lot of good all round shots of about anything you find.

You can get within an inch or so of your subject and take a photo that won't be distorted. You can shoot the hairs on your hand and it will look like a blown up photo, but better.
