No the Bible isn't always literal just realize some messages are to certain people and for certain customs. We are just supposed to learn from them not follow them all the time.

Which phrase in the bible say so? Are you sure you have fully understand its meaning?
I can accept no makeup and wear only dresses. But why can't keep short hair?
In my personal opinion, as long as you don't do anything indecent; illeagal; verbal abuse, etc. The bible is a guideline on how a human should behave.
What does following the dress code tells? Its part of sterotype actually. Eg. People who wear spectacles are seens as good and clever student. Is that really true for all?
Concentrate more on your personal development.
Follow what is good for you and ignore the nonsense.

The bible is an example, not a set of rules, God wants you to be a good person, does wearing makeup make you a bad person and prevent you or others around you from growing spiritually? Being a christian these days is very odd, because the definition has been revised over and over, Jesus was not a Christian, and I am sure he went to heaven

When you accept Christ you are free from the law of sin! If you were to follow all the old rules in the Bible you would make your salvation not a free gift but of works! There are no works that we have to do in order to have salvation or to keep our salvation!
If you want to grow in the Lord you should pray and read your Bible! The Holy Spirit will convict you of all sin and God the Father will help you not to continue in sin! To live the Christian life you need to have faith!
Do not let anyone say to you that you must do such and such a thing in order to be a committed Christian! They want to enslave you and not see you free in Christ! You are free in Christ!

Jesus was about changing the Old Rules. I'm not even sure if JEsus would agree with Paul or PEter who said "WOmen should be silent in church" however Jesus did keep with some of the old rules, he was against divorce except in cases of adultery and was in favor of men marrying to keep from being fornicators.
If you recall Jesus accepted the ointments and expensive frangrences of Mary Magdeline when Judas wanted to sell them to help the poor.
It's a balance act trying to figure out what to hold on to and what was not that Gospel.

Do not follow the the "Old Testament" per-se but do study the "New Testament" religiously and you may see the light that Jesus Christ talked about. Jesus had far more great thoughts on the role of women in Christianity than these shallow examples you point out.

Not necessarily. Jesus summed the old law up into two commands: love the Lord with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. Didn't say anything about braiding hair, wearing dresses (or what fabric, for that matter), what to eat, etc. The old law was fulfilled in Him, and your task now is to honor Him and do everything for the Glory of God. If it doesn't give glory to God, don't do it. If it does, do it. If it isn't relevant, don't fret over it. (For example, does God want me to buy the red shirt, or the green shirt)

That would be silly. Those rules are the rules of cultures that are long gone and have nothing to do with religion.
One of the things Jesus tried to do is to free people from turing religion into a set of rules. The Jews of his time were hamstrung with 613 rules they had to follow.
His main contribution to religion was to get out of that box and try to get people to realize that religion was about caring for others and not about following some silly set of rules. Unfortunately he got killed for his radical idea and then St. Paul came along and turned him into a God so that people could avoid taking responsibility for their actions once more and reduce religion to a different set of rules.

No that's has nothing to do with being a Christian today, follow the 10 commandants, listen to your heart and walk in faith. The Bible is your study guide to life.

Just follow the 2 laws for Christians that Christ gave. Love God with your whole heart, mind and soul; love your neighbour as yourself. We're not under those old laws anymore.
