as a runner I can tell you that running burns much more than walking. the traditional conversion is 100 calories to a mile, so 3 miles plus hills would put you around 350. to walk that much would probably be maybe 5-6 miles. walking just doesnt require much muscle or cardiovascular work.

That's an interesting question. I've never really thought about converting caloric use from running into walking. Someone let me know if anyone figures out a way to do this. I really am interested now.
