It does not start in any way, not even with the Windows CD (XP). I have already tried chkdsk, no answer. There are always problems with the command, it appears to be wrong. The computer is completely dead. Please, please HELP!!!!! The dos mode I think is the only way to run a programme to solve the problem without opening windows.

I think Windows XP is not DOS-based, so I don't think you can work in DOS outside of Windows, except for maybe with the help of a boot disk. If you can access BIOS, you might check to make sure that your computer is set to boot from CD. It would help to know more about what's happening when you try to start it up. It's kind of difficult to diagnose a problem from just "it doesn't start."

Press F8 while the computer is booting. The menu that you get has a entry for safe mode, but it also has an entry for a Command (DOS) prompt.

If you can't get to the menu, you may have hardware problems, see a computer technician.

If it's not booting from the CD, then the boot device may need to be changed.
Press DELETE as the computer is turned on, and it will bring up your SETUP options.
Then find the boot up device options, and make D: your first boot device.
(it's usually A: followed by C:)
Then save settings and exit.
And hopefully it should boot from your CD drive.
Good luck!
