I have 2 litter boxes in my spare room that we use as an office. We clean them often, but it always smells like urine in there. I know it's bad to have fragrant things close to litter boxes, but I NEED to do something about the smell. Any suggestions? I don't want to use anything too strong so that the cats quit using their boxes.

I use one of those automatic litter boxes, expensive as h***, but worth it. Also, when I clean it out, I turn on the ventilation fan (the litter box is in the bathroom) and use Febreeze after wards. If you use more than 1 box, I would try putting them in different rooms.

The arm and hammer baking soda for litter boxes is awesome. It is in the aisle with the litter and will make any litter smell better. Always use clumping litter or a crystal litter. You scoop out the urine with the clumping and the crystals actually absorb it.

I have two cats and the best investment I made was buying a littermaid auto cat box. If you maintain it (every three days or so for me) there is little to no smell. I reuse the little receptacle boxes, so after the initial incestment, the only additional cost is occasionally buying new littler receptacles when they start to get too funky. I have only had to buy two new boxes of receptacles in 2.5 years.

Use clumping litter only if your cats don't eat any of the litter. Very young cats (like babies) experiment and they can die if it clumps inside them. I use natural litter and scoop it a couple times per day and it works fine without the strong deodorizing scents (which I think smell bad, too). Also, a litter box with a lid and door works great; however, I put mine facing toward the wall in front of the window. I opened it just a crack and put stickable velcro on the window and top of the cat box. I used iron-on strips to put velcro on a flat bed sheet. Then I draped it so there was just a little space on the side for the cats to walk through to get to the litter box. With the velcro it is easy to scoop and change the cat box.

First of all, are you using clumping litter or the regular clay. I have 18 cats, all indoors and my house never smells of urine and I feel its because of the clumping litter. I clean the boxes (I use baby swimming pools, two of them) twice daily and I've never had an odor, (except when they poop sometimes, but that goes away) I also use an air freshener, the Wisp, you can regulate the puffs, and I use that in the living room.

I have had clients that used the cedar or yesterdays news and they have all switched to the clumping litter.

Hope this helps

I have one cat, and I keep the box in my large master bath. The only time we ever smell anything is if he has just had a B.M. I scoop it every day and completely change the litter once a week. I do have a covered liter bos with a flap over the door. I use Tidy Cat "tidy-lock" cat litter. Maybe you could try putting one of the litter boxes in another room...two is a lot for one room.

Litter boxes with multiple cats should be scooped everyday (if you use scoopable litter) and washed with a mild detergent at least once a week.

Add baking soda to the fresh litter box or try a scented litter in one box and your regular brand in the other. If the cats use both litter boxes, consider switching to a lightly scented litter.

Try a different litter such as Arm and Hammer and scopp the box at least twice a day and clean it completely once a week

perhaps the cat litter you are using doesn't absorb the smell.. try using those clumpable ones. though more expensive, it does the work.

you don't have to throw the whole pan of sand away either, just scoop the part where it's clumped and the rest can be re-used.

or try pine wood shavings. litter made from wood.

cheers!

Switch to a better brand of cat litter.

You know.. I have never had any problem with stinking litter boxes.. I buy the brands(several) that have ODOR control and I pick up the poop daily. I have not heard of people having problems.
