My friend woke up and was bearing down on a piece of paper with a red marker, writing things like rage, hate, kill. There were other markers there, but while he was asleep he chose the red one.

1.) Is your friend by chance a relative of M. Night Shyamalan...

2.) There's something on his mind...
Sleep walking is one thing (My brother used to get up in the middle of the night and pee on random things in his sleep)

Sleep walking is a disorder but not exactly apnea- possible side effects of distress or maybe something more.

Reccomended CT Scan, exorcism, or removing markers from his possesion... Replace with pink.

According to the reading I have done regarding hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), the brain, when it senses that blood sugar is low, will do sometimes strange things to get the blood sugar (glucose) out of storage and into the blood stream. Adrenaline is one sure way to do this. Nightmares and sleepwalking and probably sleep writing may cause an adrenaline rush, then low blood sugar is probably the cause.

Before your friend goes to bed, like about 30 minutes before, he may want to eat a small snack. I suggest 1-2 oz of turkey (triptophan - spelling approximate), a cracker or a cookie, or if concerned about weight - a low glycemic carbohydrate, like ½ apple, and also some nuts - almonds or peanuts are best. Do drink a glass of water with this. This is a recipe for some slow burning energy that will help level blood sugar out for the night.

Somnambulism, sleep walking disorder. Some people who sleep walk do more than "Walk". I would highly suggest that your friend see a professional. I've never heard of someone writing and becoming (apparently) filled with rage in their sleep state. Schizophrenia is my first thought. It would be best for your friend to know what she/he is dealing with, as it could get out of hand.
