When I let my 18 month golden retriever out in the backyard she starts to dig. Family members tell me that shes bored but she has my other dog a pug named Randy to play with and a pool to freely splash in and TONS of toys.
What else should I do?

I go with her every morning and before bed for an hour jog and she has a doggy door so she can run all day long. The sand box thing sound really good and so does the mothball one.
thanks I'll try them out.

I have a yellow lab who also likes to dig. We gave her a sand pit to dig in. We also bury toys in the sand for her to find. Now she knows where she is allowed to dig, and we don't get mad and she doesn't get into trouble doing something she likes to do!

I had a "Diggety Dog"---that's what I called him. He was always left out with the confident dog. I am positive he dug out of anxiety. He dug a hole so deep, I laid him inside it and told him he dug his own grave. I had researched solutions, but didn't try them. I caught him digging when he had the electric collar on, I remember. Maybe that stopped it, or he just gained confidence or grew up, but he's never dug at our new home. I think ideas I got included, making a special digging area and joyfully digging with him so that would be the one spot dug in and another was to shallowly bury chicken wire in spot(s) he frequently dug up, as he'd reach that soon and wouldn't like the feel. I also think there was something about burying balloons that would pop when dug up. I'd think the balloon would pop while you buried it, though.

If she is digging in specific places, place moth balls there. This is a great deterant!
Remember, she is still a kid. Retrievers are known to be high strung as long as 5 years!
You need to exercise her. Hard exercise, not roaming through a back yard. A very long brisk walk. Contineuous fetching(even in the pool). Make her work out, tire her out. Don't expect her to do this on her own!

dogs dig for many reasons, to get cool , for a smell in the dirt they smell. bordom, Is there a place that can be given to her just to dig? she can be taught to only dig in her area. in places she has dug already and you done want here to. sprinkle some red pepper in the area not alot but enough it will make her sneeze, or put a few rocks in the area . find something that she likes better than digging.. good luck

the dog is still young and still has a lot of energy and needs to release it and one of the retreivers traits is diging and you must go to her when she starts to dig and avert her attn. to play with something. Retreivers have a lot, a lot of energy, when they are young, and if not trained the right way. So you need to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes everyday walking the dog and if it continues twice a day.

Many dogs like to dig holes. I don't think shes digging holes because shes bored. Its a dog thing dogs dig holes. I don't know how you can get her to stop.

there are a couple reasons why she could be doin this..for one thing, shes probably hot..and lays in it...or she could be bored...one thing that u could do is put chicken wire in the hole and cover it up so when she digs there she feels the wire on her paws, and it doesnt feel good, therefore she wont do it any more..it worked for me.
