My fitness instructor says no. I have a really big belly that makes me look like I am 8 months pregnant, but the rest of me is really skinny. If I try to eat less and exercise more, I lose weight all over and have bony girl arms and legs. I don't drink beer, so it's not a beer belly - just genetic. Any way I can just get rid of the fat on the abdo without resorting to liposuction?

There are no direct pathways from the fat cells to the muscle cells.

But while spot reduction is not possible, spot gains of strength in certain body parts is. Isolating and strengthening the muscles in your midsection can automatically decrease your waistline, even if no attention is geven to reducing your calories.

What matters most in losing fat from your waistline are the following practices:

Consumption of calories must be lower than energy expenditure on a daily basis.

The continual sipping of at least 1 gallon of ice-cold water per day accelerates fat loss and stomach flattening.

Hard brief strength training ensures that the resulting weight loss is from fat. Strength training also improves the shape, firmness and contours of the midsection muscles.

Your trainer is right, no such thing as spot reducing, when you do cardio your body will burn fat all over, and if you'll stick with it, you will burn fat off of your abdominal area, you just need to be very patient and give it some time. This may be the last place you'll notice, since this is where the fat has accumulated the most. You're losing it there, just slower than the other places, so get with the cardio, and give it some time, be consistent, you can do it!

im 17 and I lost 20 pounds. I did the most simple thing. I didnt eat late at night. I drunk nothing but water or Coca-Cola Zero's and every diet drink with no Calories. I would eat a hamburger though, its about 600 and something calories, but at least I got my calories in for that day and then I would eat something healthier later on in that day. When you go to the store, DONT buy sweets and things HIGH in calories!!! Focus mainly on calories!!! Although I workout 7 days a week now, and still do these same things. You can lose weight the same way, without working out. But it is best though! Remember! 3 Days a week at least and 30 mins at least. Not bad for real. Just get a mp3 player or watch your fav show while working out in a gym for about 30 mins at least. Stay hydrated also. Treadmills mostly focus on the thighs, hips, legs ,and everything else. Before you know it you will be toned and beach body ready! Dont give up, and might sound weird but stand in front of a mirror and look at all the things you dont like about your body, and also write down things that bother you or that have been said about you about your weight. I did this, and it help motivate me through the process of losing weight. DONT GIVE UP!

Your instuctor is right...some body types are genetic. Best you can do is watch what you eat, do cardio and strength training, and do a lot of core work to strenghten the muscles in your abdomen. Make sure you do lower back work (it helps pull your stomach muscles in). Also, a recent study found that people who supplemented 3.4 g of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) lost more body fat than those who took a Placebo. You can find that in grass-fed beef.

Im gonna try and help you out as much as I can here im a weight lifter.. If you are losing fat in your arms etc while losing weight you should also be during curls to keep the muscle and therafter have them get bigger. Also muscle weighs more then fat. running and doing extreme crunches will help loose the fat there and build the muscle. You can do 10000 situps and still not see results because the fat will still be there the muscle will be under the fat. Also dieting is important. GOODLUCK to you hope i helped

A number of years ago, I started doing 20 situps a day. This effected a rather startling spot reduction. I have not kept up religiously with it, but I have maintained enough benefit from it that if I consciously remember to suck in the gut et al., it appears as though I had in fact kept up with it.

Your trainer is correct. However, if you are generally overweight, intra-abdominal fat is the first fat to go when you start exercising.

Liposuction is an option if it really just a stubborn deposit of subcutaneous fat.
