Perhaps because the perception is that guys are more aggressive when it comes to actually going up to a girl and complimenting and trying to impress them. Girls tend to be coy but not always and play a bit hard to get. They react to the guy's forwardness in a manner that isn't as overt. So it's flirting.. Hell, I don't know, really. I guess it's just always been that way.

Haha..I thought it was the same for both sexes. Shows how much I know. Haha. Maybe because guys are more direct, more "your place or mine" when they are first meeting a girl. And we're all about subtle hints, usually. But really, this is just another one of those double standards that exists between the sexes. Like guys being called "studs" if they have sex w/ a bunch of girls, and girls being called "sluts" if they do the same thing.

dude, they meen the same thing, the dude that made it up proably thought "flirting" was a girly word, so he made up "hitting on" either way, it is the same thing
