She's 18 months old, about 25lbs, and has a fever and a cough. She refuses to take liquid medicine, so I give her little dissolving baby tylenol tabs for her fever. But I cant get her to take robitussin for her cough. We have even tried holding her down and forcing the medicine in but she just coughs or chokes and it comes flying back out. Any pointers on how to help relieve her fever and/or cough? At what temperature should I become concerned and take her in? I have one of those ear thermomreters but it doesnt seem very accurate. Shes had it for a couple days, and is still feeling good enough to fun around and be onery, so I'm not too worried, but still concerned it may get worse. Thanks for any advice! :)

ANY temp over 103 degrees should be taken as SERIOUS.

TO get temp down, give her a lukewarm bath.
Let her play, get hot & sweaty.

PUT her medicine in APPLESAUCE, YOGURT, JUICE ETC.

I have 11 & 7 yr old sons that WONT take ANY medicine unless it is in APPLESAUCE!!! LOL

I'm not a doctor, but I am a mother of three. Try a different brand of cough medicine that tastes better than the robitussin (triaminic or dimetapp come to mind). If she has a fever of 101 for more than 2 days or if it doesn't come down with tylenol, she needs to see a doctor. Also encourage fluids. They will help loosen up the mucus and keep her hydrated. You can also try a vaporizor in her room and elevate the head of her bed or crib.

My daughter had a fever of 103 and had an ear infection. She was running all around the doctor's office and he said if he hadn't just taken her temperature and diagnosed the ear infection, he would have thought she was fine.

Im not a doctor, but I have three kids, two of whom always seem to have some sort of respiratory cough type thing. Who also hate to take meds.

My doc recommends taking half a teaspoon of corn syrup and it will quiet a cough and thin anything in the chest. You can repeat it every 5 hours or so. They take it much better than Robitussin.

As far as fever, I would call if it got up around 103 and you couldnt control it. Goodluck!

She should be seen to rule out bronchitis or pnuemonia. You don't say how high her fever has been. The fever in itself is not dangerous, as it is actually the body's way of helping to fight the infection. This helps treat her illness. If it doesn' t go above 101.4 F, I wouldn't even treat it, unless she is uncomfortable. Because she has been ill for a few days now, if there is no resolution of symptoms tomorrow, she will need to be seen. Most likely, it is a simple upper respiratory infection. A high fever, above 101.4, is not usually seen in an uncomplicated upper respiratory infection, and can be a sign that more is going on. Good luck, and the advice about raising the head of the crib and using a cool mist humidifier is helpful. Karo or corn syrup has no effect whatsoever on a cold or cough, so I wouldn't try that. It's pure sugar. It is bad for her teeth.

I think they have the dissolving cough strips for kids now, though I am not sure who makes them, but they might be your best bet. Anything over 101 I would go see a DR. If it has been three days or more, I would go anyway, why take chances with a little one. Hope this helps.

Try Motrin for the fever. if it spikes over 102 call the doctor, especially if she has had it for a few days. For Cough, put a humidifier in her room. Try Vicks vapor run on Back to open up her lungs.

For the cough I would try dimatap, it tastes better and seems to work better for little kids. As for the fever, anything onver 101 in a child that young can be a problem.......... Good luck

place a cold, wet towel on her head. that will give her TEMPORARY relief. drinking tea with lemon and honey will help her throat feel better. my reccomendation is to take your daughter to a doctor a.s.a.p because you claim she's been sick for a couple of days. or you could try giving her another brand of medicine.
