Take caution to those who 'suggest' without having great knowledge of a particular non-drug therapy. Certain herbs may be fine for non-bi-polar individuals but disasterous for others.
Check 'Gary Nulls' site for potentially helpful information and/or the links his site provides.
Have a happy day...

I have Bipolar to. Haven't taken pills in years. First of all, you need to educate yourself on Bipolar. You need to know what triggers your ups and downs and what calms your ups and downs. Breathing Technique works pretty good. When you feel yourself losing it either way, lay down, or sit somewhere, and breath in deep and slowly and release it slowly, only thinking about the breathing. You could go to a counselor instead or meds to or find a friend that will be brutally honest with you. The worst thing you can do is having people make excuses for you or saying its okay, cause its not. Until you learn to control your moods, you sometimes need them pointed out. I sometimes still have to ask a close friend, "Am I over reacting to this?" or "Did I blow that one out?" Embrace your illness, don't hide it.

I'd like to add though that if you are not at a point of controlling it without meds, it is best to stay on the meds and use them as a tool to regain control.

The first thing I recommend you do is see a good medical doctor, but not a psychiatrist. (you can find a directory of doctors who do not prescribe psychiatric drugs but treat emotional problems holistically at http://www.alternativementalhealth.com ) Symptoms of “bipolar” are often in reality symptom of physiological, but not psychological problems. A good medical doctor can do a blood test and can find if someone has a lack of certain amino acids, a vitamin deficiency, toxicity, low thyroid function or a hormonal imbalance. If for example, you have a Vitamin B12 deficiency, you can then take Vitamin B12 and will soon feel much better.

If your doctor doesn’t find a physiological reason why you’re feeling the way you are, you may then be interested in using herbal supplements. Here are some herbs that you might find helpful:

Valerian: Nature's valium. Another favorite for the treatment of anxiety is valerian. Derived from the dried rhizomes and roots of this tall plant, which grows in wet soil in many countries, valerian has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy. As a natural relaxant, it is useful for several disorders including restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, menstural problems, and "nervous" stomach. Valerian acts on the brain's GABA receptors to produce a tranquilizing action that is similar to Valium-type drugs, but without the same side effects.

St. John's Wort: Wonder Weed. Imagine an antidepressant that is as effective as prescription drugs but has mild side effects, if any, and even boosts libido. Sound like a fantasy? It's not. You've just met St. John's Wort, an herb taken by many thousands of people every day. In fact, in Europe, Hypericum perforatum is prescribed by doctors five times as often as Prozac.

You can take herbs on your own without discussing it with your doctor or an herbalist (they're available even at the corner drug store as well as on the internet and in health food store) But I recommend taking herbs under the supervision of a doctor or herbalist to make sure that you're taking the herbs and dosages that are right for you. I'll give you the website for the American Herbalists Guild: http://www.americanherbalistsguild.com

If you really would like to see a psychiatrist, there aren't a lot of good ones but one who's awesome is located in Pacific Palisades California and I believe you can get medical advice from her by email. Dr. Cass's website is listed below. Dr. Cass, unlike most psychiatrists, is an orthomolecular psychiatrist who has extensive knowledge of herbal remedies.

There is no cure for bipolar disorder. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain. At this time, the best doctors can do is restore the balance through the use of medications.

Sincerely,
Terry

I think that it will be very hard to correct this all together on your own, it is hard to control an imbalance in your brain, the drugs that are prescribed by your doc prescribed will be most effective..keep in mind that if you quit taking meds then start again they may be less effective.

There is no "cure" for bipolar. Sorry. But you might try to control it with diet. Try the macrobiotic diet, I've heard that it really works. But it's a lot of work.
