They do..I have 2 friends that walk their cats on a leash..
but, since cats use a litter box, many people don't bother to train them to walk on a leash.

Cats and dogs are 2 different subjects. Cat have the need to roam around where ever the please. It's like this. U can get a dog used to wearing clothes, even though it's kind of odd. And cats hate wearing stuff. And when a cat gets made at u they tend to scratch u. So thats probably why people don't walk cats.

I've tried - first you have to get the cat in the harness, and that's no easy feat. Then you take the cat outside, and...nothing happens. My cat would stand in the grass, then fall over onto her side. She really wouldn't walk, and if you tried to lead her somewhere with the leash, she would just fall over and wouldn't go anywhere. I guess, if you started early, when the cat was just a kitten, you could train it to walk on a leash and enjoy it, but it would take some time.
Leash training the cat was invaluable, though, when I travelled with my cat. She always wore the harness and leash, so when I opened the car door, she couldn't escape!

Some people do.

Many people take their cats out on leashes. Some cats won't tolerate a harness, but some are OK with it.

My late, great Rusty used to love to go for long walks with me in the woods and fields near our home. He didn't need a leash, he just enjoyed the idea of us "prowling" together, and he always took great care to never go anywhere I couldn't follow. He was a very special kitty, but I know of one other cat who loved to go for walks like that with his mom.

A very, very few do - it takes an enormous amount of patience to train a cat to walk to a leash. That, and a lot of band-aids.

No, they're not for the cat!

Cat's naturally are more free spirited and would prefer to do their walking and exploring on their own time. So in a way, they have slightly more human qualities than dogs, because dogs generally don't mind having someone else take control.

Have you ever tried?!!! I have. One cat, I just used the tiny leash from my first dog. At least it went on him, however, he wouldn't walk. Cats sit and think, then pounce, then sit again. I got bored. I tried with the next kitten, but bought a cat harness. He was a demure kitten, so I thought we had a chance. We ended up with a tangled mess, so bad, I pitched it. I gave my mother my retractable leash to hook to better cat harness, as cat is now in apt and not her yard. He won't move with it on, just lays flat on the ground. (He also hates treats.) I give up!

cats are more solitary animals...dogs are pack animals. It is natural for dogs to walk, it is what their ancestors like the wolf did, traveling for miles to search for food. Some people do take their cats for walks, but the ones i have seen do not seem to like it.
