The same thing happens to me. They love to quote you and put you in the defensive mode. Knowing that you may have principles or scruples, they would try righteous indignation and "how dares". Those are all common tactics. Attack, attack, attack. By bullying, you'd get rid of most of your opponents. All others will either cower, and those who share your opinion will be emboldened to attack on their own.
