My stepfather occasionally has severe back problems. He was taken in an ambulance once and was given high doses of pain killers and muscle relaxers that did little to help him.

Today he threw out his back. About an hour ago or so he took 2 muscle relaxers (oxycoton I think) AND 2 tylenol pm. Usually he only takes one of either. Now he is slurring his words slightly and I am somewhat worried. My boyfriend thinks he overdosed (he's a firefighter trained in EMS). He went to lay in his bed with an ice pack.

Is this an overdose? We are keeping an eye on him (my mom went grocery shopping). But what else can we do? What can result from this. Is it okay if he falls asleep? How will know if he's okay?

If its back problems no, the boduy takes the oxyvcoton into tissue to relax the back. My unlce had the same problem. He will be fine, make sure he doesnt take any more though.

I think it is. I'm not concerned about the tylenol, but the oxycodone is an opiate. Not only is it extremely habit forming, it can cause a host of side effects. The doctor that prescribed it to him ought to be sued for malpractice. If you can get him coherent enough to try something that works, have him check this book out: "Overcome Neck and Back Pain" by Kit Laughlin. I used it and it works great for back pain. Far more effective than medication or a chiropracter. Don't trust me, though. Read the reviews. Just do a Google search for "laughlin overcome neck and back pain" and see what you get.

Tell him: "Thank you for your service." for me. I tell that to all firefighters. They do some seriously heroic work and don't get thanked nearly enough.

well he just took two doses of a opiate and some sleeping pills. i would call poison control and have how many he usually takes and what the pill bottle says and they will be able to tell you if you need to be worried.

Definately monitor him. An overdose depends on how his body reacts to both medications and its different for everybody, Have you checked his breathing, blood pressure, and heart pace.

oxycotin is a very powerful drug. you'd have to tell us more information, such as the dosage.. and how many he usually takes.

if you're that worried just take him to a hospital.
