My dog, Asher, and my cat, Moo, have been really close pals since I brought Moo home 3 months ago. They sleep together, play together, things like that.
Earlier today I gave Asher a dog treat for being good. He started eating it and Moo walked over and decided he was going to eat the crumbs. The next thing I know, the dog lunges at Moo and tried to bite him for eating the crumbs.
I know some dogs do this because it's nature, but i really can't have a dog that is going to behave this way because i've got 5 kids and sometimes they get too close when the dog's eating and I don't need the dog doing something to one of my kids.
How do I break him of this behavior?

How could I keep them away from eachother? Designate part of the house to each one of them? Get real. Stop wasting my time.

When I was a kid, we had a great dog that would growl and snap at anyone but my parents, if they got near his food.. My dad trained the dog to sit, and would not feed him or allow us kids to feed him, unless he sat patiently for one minute..Problem was solved..he learned that he had to be patient to get food.

If your dog didn't actually BITE the kitten, he wasn't trying to bite..Dogs have an excellent aim, and do exactly what they intend to do with their mouths..such as pick a fly out of the air..so, if he didn't bite, he didn't intend to bite, but only to warn.

.simplest solution...
Feed him twice per day in an area free of kids and cats..pick the food up after 15 minutes...Don't worry if he doesn't eat it all the first few times..feed only what he will eat in 15 minutes twice per day..don't give him treats unless you are in control..Too simple..huh?

Best of luck to you and yours.

my son's black lab died last year at SEVENTEEN !!! he was a really great dog except for one little thing.... he was good with the kids ( they had the dog before they had kids) they could lay all over him BUT... he actually KILLED 2 small dogs at differnt times... they invaded his territory ( thank goodness for that or he would have been sued big time ) So keep that in mind... they don't like to "share" anything... I was really afraid after those 2 incidents....

Dog training. Yell at him, punish him, make sure he knows it's wrong.
