Men do it to be nice. My husband always holds the door for me. He opens my car door, holds my hand when walking down steps, and holds the door open for me. I love it. I think that even if the man "thinks" that he is superior, he should still hold the door for a woman.

Personally, I will hold the door for anyone, not just women. It's politeness.
And no, men are not superior, and neither are women. Grow up, people.

When a man holds the door for a woman, he is showing respect. It comes from a patriarchal society that said men were superior and women were the weaker sex, but continues as a sign of respect.
I have no problem with a man showing me respect. We need more of it.

It used to be that women were the weaker(strength) of the sex but today that has changed and now its to be polite. The other scenario is that when a woman goes through the door first, if there were an intruder inside then she would be attacked first then the man could defend her honor by trying to defend the offender off.
Chivalry at its best. :-)

i wish i truely knew. they think they are so big and tough. but i think its just a way to sway us into liking them more. being polite and sweet is what we love, they love us, so therefore, they would do whatever they have to, to keep us. if u think about it like that, i think women are actually superior just in disguise. they think they are but we really are when we can get them to work for it if they really want us. what to most guys think about all the time WOMEN! so therefore i think we have the upperhand on that one. dont u agree? u dont have to though. its a common fact, guys will talk about girls way more, than girls ever talk about guys. yes we may do slaving work for them but that would be part of our whole scheme. by doing that, they are pleased, so then they treat us very well, so in the end we end up being the superior ones just because we are that clever.

It's called common courtesy,good manners,good etiquette and it has nothing to do with one gender's superiority over another.I am a woman and I've held a door open for a man;I do not feel that I am any less superior or inferior for having done so,I just hope that my actions were appreciated!

Holding the door for a lady is the proper etiquette that all gentlemen must at least do.It also show that he is from a very good family with good up bringing.
