Yes being AWOL is brave because you have then decided to your self that i will not follow the crowd and risk of getting shot instead i will just not go. Also you know if you are caught you know the punishment. So you have to be very brave to go on AWOL on the first place

No. It's pretty much going back on your word to the people you swore to protect. I'd call them cowards. If they disagree with an order, they should have the guts to stand up to their CO and face a dishonorable discharge if thats how much they believe a moral and ethical code is being violated. If someone goes AWOL, they could be captured and pose a security risk to their remaining unit. There's better ways to deal with issues than that.

how can you consider someone who joins the military to start with smart for going awol once they're in a dangerous situation? sounds like you're describing a weak person who lacks integrity. why would someone join the military if they refused to participate in combat? i'm pretty sure there is some kind of oath of service or something when one joins the military, so if they bugger out when the going gets tough, then they are showing they are not a man of their word. there is no 'bravery' or smarts evident in someone who can't even keep their own promises.

People who go AWOL are those who are unable to face up to their obligations. A person as an adult signs a contract and swears to bear true faith and allegiance to the US Constitution. Americans who are unwilling to defend this document, and their fellow citizens from whatever their government deems a threat to the nations way of life, are ungrateful. And getting shot at isn't that bad as long as you have a fight and not flight reaction.

No. You knew the risk when you signed up. The military isn't about knitting all day. They teach you to fight to defend your country. Going AWOL is like leaving your significant other because they gained 5 pounds.

If you go AWOL you are a coward.
Serving the military is voluntary.
If you don't want to be shot at don't enlist.

No, it means that you are a coward.

The U.S. has an all volunteer military There is no point in going AWOL, everyone that joins knows the risks.

If you don't want to get shot at, don't join in the first place. If you do and go AWOL, you are a coward and deserve jail.

If you join the army in the first place and go AWOL because you don't want to fight you are an idiot. Why join in the first place?

So using your logic, Police that don't show up when they are called for shootings in area of the city they don't care for then they must be heros too.
