Thinking about getting a great dane pup. We already have 3 other dogs, a chihuahua, and two mutts (shepard hound mix about 70 lbs each). We also have a new baby (8 months). What do you think? How are these dogs? If anyone has one let me know!! Thanks!!!!

I have one and had no idea what we were getting into. He's 2yo and HUGE.
Beware of him accidentally sitting on the other dogs and suffocating one - yes it happens alot - he thinks he's just snuggling, but he's bigger and heavier than he thinks..
They drool ALOT and they shake and throw it all around..
And you have to poop-scoop because it's like having a horse in your yard - its also huge.... like I said BEWARE
BUT he is amazingly gentle with the kids - and thinks he's a lapdog - tries to sit on all of us all the time. You will NEVER have to worry about him being rough with the kids - they are very big loveable animals - kinda lazy (not hyper dogs at all) as long as he doesn't sit on them

The life span of a Dane is now 8-10 yrs. I had one that lived to 11 yrs. It all depends on quality breeding and good care.
Danes are good around children past puppyhood. Puppies will be puppies.
Mine mostly likes to just be loved and sleep on the couch. Some of the backyard breeders are not breeding for temperment, so beware of them.

Great Danes are great dogs and very smart, train easy and very loving...just watch out for that tail when the baby starts to walk...right at face level,I have gotten hit right in the crotch and it HURTS, so it can do real damage to a toddler....start training as soon as you get a pup, dont wait till it grows up...lol

I love them! They usually live only around 7 years since they are such a large breed. They are referred to as "gentle giants" and I know many people who have them, who have children, and they are great with the kids. I will suggest that you have a large area for them to run, they are quite an active dog. Check out petfinder.com, there are a ton of Danes on there. Rescue one, don't buy one!! And remember, white ones with blue eyes are usually deaf....that holds true with mostly all animals!

I love Great Danes! I don't have one, but I love them! Just beware, Great Danes are the #1 victim of GDV (gastric dialation volvulus) also known as "bloat" Please read up on it so you know the symptoms.

IN NO WAY!! does this make the breed a bad idea!! However I just went through a GDV episode with my ShepX and I nearly lost him. It was corrected with surgery.

Good luck!

I have one son,two daughters, and one very lovable dane.He has been part of our family for over seven years . They are a very protective breed . One thing you need to watch for is big feet on little baby.LOL Sometimes our dane thinks he is a lap dog .I would definitely have danes with children. They also tend to be very mothering to kids and other pets too.We named ours after our son and it fits perfectly Sir.Kurstyn'sGentelGiant. ALSO KNOWN AS...{.BUDDY}BYE THE WAY OUR DANE WEIGHS OVER 170LBS not fat just a Harlequin breed one of the largest.

I agree, I've heard they are GREAT family dogs. There are dane rescue groups everywhere, so you might be able to find a pure breed for less and you'd be saving it :)

as for the person who posted about rotties. you don't know what you're talking about. you shouldn't make breed specific generalizations. I have had dogs my entire life and i bought a rottie when i got my own house and she is the BEST dog i have ever had... especially with my children, and any children for that matter. please educate yourself.

your hands are very full. id say wait till you dont have the tiny one. great danes love to play and your 70 pounders are even able to get out played by a full grown dane. wait awhile. there is time later.

great danes are gentle giants tho they have a life expectancy of only about 8 year but you must teach them when they are young not to be to bouncy around the children.
