First of all, understand that I'm not a collector, so my judgment needs to be confirmed by a dealer. But in selling some old coins we owned, I discovered that for common dates, old silver coins need to be in exceptionally good condition, - Extremely Fine to Uncirculated to have a numismatic (collector) value greater than the value of the silver bullion.

I'd think 7 - 10 times face value is a good ballpark figure (buy for 7X, sell for 10X), unless your coin's date is very rare.
