have you had any kids in your car with crayons, they might have dropped them. and as most people know crayons melt in the sun so i would check your car. they might be melted and stuck to your floor board. i have a jetta to but it has never spelt like crayons before even when it was brand new.

Oh my God! Yes! I couldn't place the smell when I bought the car ('01 new beetle) but a number of my friends on several and seperate occasions independently identified the smell as crayon! I've vacuumed the car and sprayed various deoderizers and done everything in my power to combat the smell but for whatever reason it still smells like crayon. Stranger still is that I have plain old fabric seats. Best thing I can advise is to air out the car, scrub the mats, and get yourself an air freshener if the smell really bothers you.

All the 01 Jettas with Leather had that problem. There is no cheap way to fix it either.

Go to the www.vwvortex.com forums, and look for melted crayon in the Jetta IV section and you'll see hundreds of posts about it.

I have a 2001 Jetta VR6 and yes it occasionally smells like a crayon. The smell is from the glue used to hold the vents together inside your Air Conditioner. But you can get rid of the smell by simply running your air conditioner every now and then. That should diminish the smell and possibly get rid of it all together.

YES I MINE DOES TOOOO, i have a 2001 jetta 1.8t it smells like a brand new box of crayola crayons. and i think it has to do with there sound-proofing. cause on the inside of the door they have a wax-like insulation and i think that causes it. but DONT use fabreez on it it just makes it worse. i just got a new Ionic air freshener but i have not used it yet i will see if that works.

Oh and i dont have leather seats so i dont think that is the reason!!!!!

melting Cosmaline is what that smell is....they apply it on the under carriage of the car when it's being built to avoid rusting in transport and if it's applied to heavily when the car gets hot it will start to melt and the smell will come out the air conditioning vents...worse when you have on the air circulation button. It is something that can not be fixed.

Come to think of it, my first car was an Audi and now I own a Jetta VR6. Both of them smelled like that. I always thought that it was something to do with the cooling system, like antifreeze. It does seem to come through the vents though.

Yes it is due to the wax used in the doors. Look under the door on the running board, there is most likely some sort of melted wax gooey greasiness underneath the door.

The problem lies in the wax that they use inside the paneling of the cars. I forgot what it is called. If you live in an area that gets very hot during the summer this wax will start oozing out of the bottom of the doors.
