Why are some christians some of the most closed minded, ignorant and intolerant people on the planet.
Isn't the whole point of Christianity supposed to be about goodness and loving your fellow man?
Why are they so judgemental when the bible teaches not to judge.

I believe in Jesus.

I'm glad you said "some" :) I agree with you wholeheartedly, and that's the kind of Christian I try to be.

Because Christians are made up of ordinary people and a segment of that group is judgmental. In fact, you are doing the same thing. You have selected behaviors you do not like, but probably have your own issues.
Also, sometimes loving is being judgmental and goodness is as well. If your son is on cocaine, do you judge the safety of that behavior even thought he does not like it or do hug him or both? There are things that we should be intolerant of. Some people have a wider list of things they are intolerant of. You are intolerant of people announcing in public what they are intolerant of, you would prefer they kept it inside.

No Christian is without sin. They are still human and fall prey to the shortcomings all people experience from time to time. Also, there are many so-called Christians out there who profess Faith but never show it outside of the few times they are inside a church. Christianity should be a badge of honor that leads and uplifts the people that passes through life.

Two things we are supposed to do.
1. discern people
2. separate the person from the sin.
To discern a person is to tell what the base of the person is.
I can talk to a person for about 15 minutes and I can discern him. Know is base what he is about.
The other to separate the person from the sin.
Lets take a thief. Any thief. remove the sin of stealing from the man and you just have a man who like all men have hopes, dreams, likes and dislikes. A man that could be anyone of us.
Unfortunately many Judge instead of discern.
And separate the man from the sin throw the sin away and say the man is pure, without retribution.
Both are wrong equally.

Everyone is intolerant to something they believe is wrong. people of all religions and many other life-styles. Its not just a christian thing its a people thing. Think of one of the things you think is the most awful thing someone can do. Say a pedophile what do you think of them? We all think its amoral and wrong and disgusting and scarey as hell. But they think we are being intolerant and close minded. It sucks to say but being a narrow-minded society keeps us from anarchy. If we go too far left then awful people will have the rights to do awful things but the same goes for if we go too far right and become too close minded we will lose all our freedoms.

It depends what you mean by intolerant. We're supposed to be intolerant of sin; but there is certainly a right and a wrong way to respond to it. And not everyone who says he is a Christian really is.

You may not get a lot of responses. Christians do not do self evaluation very well - they avoid it at all cost. Ask the same question, but swap Christian to Atheist, see what happens.

Sounds like a leading question :)
Being a follower of Jesus Christ means that (a) we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, and (b) we are to take a stand for truth.
People tend to love Christians when they do "a" and hate Christians when they do "b".
Having said that, Christians are to speak the Truth in Love (not in arrogance or pride).

I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ (e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).
For scientific and intellectual evidence for the existence of God, see http://www.godsci.org/gs/godsci/evidence.htm
--
One thing that attracted me to Christianity was the love of Christ, and the love of Christians who spend endless hours answering my questions and dealing with my doubts.
Cordially,
John

The self-righteous and the hardcore give all of us a bad name, they are the fanatics. Then every other Christian gets stereotyped.
