Most supermarkets have a bakery with birthday cakes on display ready to be written on, purchased, and taken home and eaten.

I love Costco cakes. Do you live in or near NYC? There's a nice Italian bakery called Veniero's and they have a great variety of cakes. If you're not from around there, at least you have a tip on where to go for your next vacation. Baskin Robbins has great stuff too but I really go crazy for Carvel. It had a layer of cookie crumbs sandwiched between vanilla and chocolate ice cream. Mmmm.

You can go to your local grocery store. The cake will not be custom made, but you can add a name with icing (baking aisle) yourself.
OR go to an ice cream store (31 flavors? Dairy Queen?) and get an ice cream cake. They will add the name for free for you.

Costco or Sams club have very yummy cakes believe it or not. Usually local grocery stores or gourmet grocery have some on hand. Or is you have a Cold Stone Creamery, try that. I hear they are scrumptious!!
