The invention of the polygraph machine is credited to a Canadian student in medicine in 1921; however, Dr. William Moulton Marston, a Harvard trained psychologist, most commonly known for also inventing the comic book character, "Wonder Woman," was the creator of the systolic blood-pressure test used to detect deception, which became one component of the modern-day polygraph.

But, be clear on one thing: a lie detector, a polygraph, does not measure the truth but interprets the physiological variables such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and kind conductivity (perspiration) while the series of questions are being asked.

The truth behind the polygraph is that the “test” depends on trickery, not science. One reason why it is not acceptable in a court of law is that it is easy to cheat and beat the lie detector test!

I would say the Catholic church. They would accuse you of something. Torcher you and if you died, you were possibly telling the truth or if you lived you must be in legue with the Devil which meant you should have your head chopped off. They had a guy and that was his job to remove your head while the soldiers would torcher people. Early lie detecting.
