should'nt they call it starving with a purpose?

It comes from the old english 'faesten'. Perhaps had something to do with being the opposite of feast?

You fast every night. That's why they call it breakfast. I don't know why it is called fasting but it usually is done for religious reasons and includes abstaining from other pleasures as well.
