This might sound ridiculous but you might have excessive ear wax. I've personally pulled out chunks of the stuff.
but watch out for other symptoms; throat ache, headache, bleeding from the ear or small bags of pus at the far end of your throat.
Or you could just have a cold coming on.
I would have to evaluate you to really know.

I had an ear ache and it turned out to be a tooth infection. The fluid under the root was infected, so the pain was felt around my jaw and ear. Some antibiotics took care of the problem, and the pain was gone in a few days. (I never did have pain in my tooth or gums!)

You may have TMJ from clenching your teeth. This can happen during the night but check during the time you are having ear pain to see if you may be clenching your teeth. The dentist can help with this if it is TMJ. Do you have a sore throat or sinus infection ? These can also cause ear pain. Hope you feel better soon.

If you have a cold, fluid can be in your middle ear or your Eustachian tube connecting your throat to your middle ear might not be working correctly, causing a build-up of pressure. It could also just be some wax scraping on your ear drum. Sometimes a problem with a tooth can cause pain to travel to the ear.

Your jaw can also cause you ear aches. If you have been eating something that caused your jaw to close unevenly or if you have had teeth taken out or have some dental problems. Also sinuses can cause headaches in different parts of your face and ears. Also if you have been flying or a change in altitude this can also cause ear aches. Hope it helps--

Depends on where the pain is located.
If it's near your jaw, it could be TMJ.
You can try a solution of white vinegar and alcohol. Sweet oil(olive oil) can be warmed up and dropped into the ear. A warm washcloth may help.
I'd ask the doc this question, if I were you.
