I have to agree with mac on this one. If you are not sure what you're doing, take it to a professional. At the very least, you should have a repair manual, this will give you the proper steps in which to disassemble and reassemble the engine. Torque specs are very critical on this engine. Also, it takes special tools to loosen and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts. If this is not done correctly, you'll shear off the alignment pin on the camshaft and most likely bend some valves You also need a special puller and installer for the crankshaft pulley. I'm not trying to discourage you, or be mean-spirited in any way (I don't blame anyone for trying to save a few bucks!!BTDT) but this is a very technical job, and without the proper knowledge and tools, you may do more harm than good. JMHO.

I assume you have all the bolts removed and all brackets, etc. Sometimes the head gasket is stuck to the head and the block, just bump around on the head with a wooden block or rubber mallet (to avoid damage) to loosen a stuck gasket. Don't use a lot of force when doing this ! It is not a good idea to pry on the head or you could warp it. Good luck !

Get a repair manual before you tear this car apart and put it back together. You can do a lot of damage if don't do this right. Make sure there aren't any more bolts holding it on. You didn't make mention of the engine type either. But a manual is about $20 for your car and well worth it. Haynes is the best in my opinion, but Chilton is not too bad either.

Did you take all the head bolts out? Even after removing all the head bolts, you will need to hit the cylinder head with mallet from several directions to get it loose. Get a friend to help you lift up the head.
