Yes, dogs follow commands and can be taught to do tricks to entertain their owners...but cats are intelligent , in a much different way...a cat learns what it wants and needs to learn for its own comfort and survival, and is pretty good at judging which people like them or don't like them...and they pretty much stay out of trouble when left alone in the house, which is not exactly true for all dogs.
Don't get me wrong, I like both dogs and cats...but as someone who has a cat that is really bonded with my housemate and I, I felt I had to ask this question. Even though cats seem aloof and lazy, they're not always like that.

My cat is very smart...she has different meows that she uses for different things(like changing the litterbox, food, and affection)...and she does more body language with my housemate because he's hard of hearing.

a lot of people don't get the concept that animals are smart at all. they think if it can't understand every word out of their mouth the first time around it must be a stupid creature.
they can train dogs to do all kinds of things faily easily, and so they allow for some smarts - smart enough to do as they're told anyway... but with cats, it never occurs to them that the cat may understand what you want perfectly and still simply not want to do it. they think the cat forgot, or never learned in the first place. or that the cat may be clueless because it simply doesn't want to bother with a useless trick.

my new kitten learned in about 5 minutes that when he gets in trouble, if he is on something high enough, he can jump up into my arms, without using his claws, give me big old cow eyes and a purr, and get away with it.... all the dogs i've had so far only figured out how to hide until i get over being mad...

No diss to dogs, but can't don't learn tricks just to get treats.

With cats, it's their way or the highway. At least that's how it is here, I don't have cats as pets, cats have me as pet.

My oldest cat (I have 4; the oldest is 6 yrs old) hated my ex's guts! One time we were arguing and after I walked away (to avoid punching my ex on the face...), my cat walked up to my ex & scrached the hell out of his legs; then walked up to me & sat with me in the bed. He'd get pissed if we were watching tv and my ex dared sit in the couch.

They're very good guards too. My cats alert me when there's someone outside. No clue how they hear & differentiate who's outside, but sure comes in handy when new hubby works nights.

If I had a bigger place I'd love to have a dog, but truly there's no replacement for my cats. They're my babies (that is until I have real babies.

I agree, cats are very intelligent and learn what not to do quickly when disciplined. They are also more independent.
My cat even knows a few words like "hungry" and "eat" and likes to play fetch. He brings stuff back and drops it at my feet so that I can throw it and he can chase it and try to catch it again

I promise you cats are not always like that. I once had a cat who became imprinted on me and treated me like I was one of her kittens.... long story short... one day while my father was beating me the cat stepped right in between us and tried to take the blows... when he wouldn't stop the cat then jumped on his back and dug all four claws into his spine momentarily paralyizing him and effectively stopping him in his tracks... my dad was so afraid of the cat after that the he gave him away a few day's later while i as away at school..... yeap this cat actually tried to save my life lol... after that day I'll go to war with anyone that say's cats are stupid ever again.

My bosses cat came out to the shop meowing, my boss said he must be trying to tell me my wife is home, we checked and she was. he also did the same thing when the UPS guy was at the door. Funny little guy.

Hi there,
I think cats are pretty smart! It takes time to train them, just like dogs.
I'm not sure why a lot of people don't understand how smart cats are!
