my husband has battled nausea for years and thought it was smoking, low blood sugar, etc, but is beginning to suspect his meds since he has stopped smoking. Has anyone tried other anticonvulsants? do they work? less or more side effects? Thanks for any insights.

he's been on it for 6 years, no weight gain, no hair loss, just nausea. and as for docs, they don't actually take this stuff. I'd like to get feedback from those with experience. Of course he'll have to talk to his dr if he wants to make any changes. He's not in crisis mode, just horribly uncomfortable with feeling crappy all the time. Thanks for your input.

Most bipolar meds do that sorry mine dose it to me. The doc can give him nausea pills for it. they work most of the time. I am on Lithium and if he is having trouble with this he dosen't want to try this one. Tell the doc what is going on the can less the dose for him. Sorry I can not be any more help.

Your husband should discuss his side effect with his doctor. It is VERY important that he doesn't stop taking his medication - unless he is directed by his doctor.

Depakote can cause weight gain, sluggish feeling, nausea. The following are side effects associated with anticonsulsants: Nausea, Tremors, Hair loss, Sexual problems, and Weight gain.

There a many choices for bipolar. Topomax, Lithium, carbamazepine. I suggest checking out the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill website. They have great information on medications and mental illness. Check out www.nami.org.

Good luck.

low blood sugar can be treated by alternative methods.

Depakote will induce weight gain. See if his doctor will prescribe lithium. and make sure he takes a multi vitamin from a quality source like Solgar or other similar product.

No alchohol.

Vitamin C several times a day for med energy loss.

I do. It has all sorts of side effects, just like any other medication on the planet, even aspirin. I don't have side effects. Alternatives to other anticonvulsants used for manic episodes? Certainly. That's what his physician is for, to ask these questions and get some real answers from the one who knows your husband's medical history. He gets paid to do that. I've been a pharmacy tech for 10 years and would do that.

depakote has been attributed to nausea, especially when taken without food. (is he getting his blood levels checked often?) it can also cause hair loss in some individuals. have him check with his doctor for possible alternatives, not everyone can tolerate depakote.

How often does it occur? I've had pretty bad car sickness off and on for most of my life. I finally tried Ginger root in capsules and it works very well. Plus no side-effects whatsoever. You should be able to find it at GNC if your interested. Two capsules should help for most of the day. I hope he doesn't have it constantly? That would be awful. Anyways...God Bless.

I've never taken depakote.....and wouldn't. A major side effect is weight gain. People that I've known whose taken it has gained so much weight.
