Black widows are actually not that venomous. The people saying you will die or be in serious trouble are just spreading "old wives tales."
The truth is a bite from a black widow spider would be about the same as a bee or wasp sting. It would hurt ALOT for awhile until the swelling went down. You could go to the hospital, or just treat it at home with ice packs and some benadryl for the swelling and itching.
On the other hand, if you are allergic to the bite (just like some people are allergic to bee stings) you could potentially have an anaphylactic reaction - a hyper immune response, your body would start to swell up, your blood pressure would drop, and your airway could become compromised and you can die - need ER treatment immediately.
1000's of people die every year from anaphylactic reactions to bee stings. However, I am not aware of a single case of anyone dying from a black widow spider bite.
Good Luck

One of two things usually.
#1. You get lucky (very): Your skin turns brown/red and swells and itches, after a few days it rots, turns black and starts falling out by plugs. Also, you have general nausea during this time from the poison (you throw up or want too).
#2. You're not so lucky. You have to go to the hospital for a few days for drugs like antibiotics and anti-venons to be administered into your veins. Your watched careful, your sick constantly and you almost die.
Please don't scare your brother, as it could give him a phobia later on in life. Just teach him a "healthy respect" of spiders, this he can appreciate.

Here's a nice website about spiders. http://www.calpoison.org/public/spiders.html#2
What it says about black widows is that its bite is not as bad as most people think. No one has actually died of a bw bite in over ten years. Some bites have no symptoms at all. Others are more serious and of course small children and old people are most at risk. For your peace of mind you need to know that if he gets bitten he probably won't die but for his own safety he needs to know that he shouldn't be messing with spiders. I suggest you help him learn as much as possible about spiders so that he can recognize which ones are dangerous and maybe he can find a harmless one to keep for a pet. Jumping spiders are nice and kind of fuzzy.

Advice for this inquisitive four year old is this:Go ahead and mess around with the others spiders if you really want to but stay away from this one, because if you get bit,you can get really sick and maybe die really fast...This should scare him away from the dangerous female black widow.Take care...tom science

Because of the testosterone(sp) level in the sweat around their gentials and aren't black widows females well the venomous and larger ones right? Because they are females and the chemical men give off testosterone which is probably very pugnent in the gential area because it's always moist from sweat. how did I do?

I got bit by one on the hand.
My whole hand swelled up and turned black and blue.
NOT fun.
Tell you little brother that if he ever sees one again to come tell a grown up right away so the grown up can kill it with bug spray or whatever.

you pretty much lay in bed and throw up for three days or so. never happened to me but i know two people that have. if he is just 4 years old it could be even worse. his body may not be strong enough to fight the poisons and he could end up seriously sick in the hospital

Usually, you go to the hospital go get very painful anti-venom treatments. Even then, you may die. Especially someone so young.

You die unless you get treatment right away. Stop trying to kill them and run away, nut case.
