Pergatory is a Roman Catholic teaching, the fundamental purpose of which is to extract money from your wallet.
When you die, you face God in the Judgement Seat. There are no second chances to cheat hell or gain heaven.
A fundamental difference betwen Bible believing born again believers and the practitioners of the Roman Catholic religion is that the Roman Catholic religion teaches that you (or your family) can buy your way out of hell AFTER you are dead.
The Bible teaches that you do not get a second chance.
Heb 9:25 He did not do this to offer Himself many times, as the high priest enters the sanctuary yearly with the blood of another.
Heb 9:26 Otherwise, He would have had to suffer many times since the foundation of the world. But now He has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Heb 9:27 And just as it is appointed for people to die once--and after this, judgment--
Eph 2:8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift--
Eph 2:9 not from works, so that no one can boast.

There is no way to know how long purgatory will take. It is possible that it will be an instantantious process.
Times associated with indulgences are commonly thought to be reductions from time in purgatory, but they are actually the length of time doing penance they are equivalent to.
One thing is clear that purgatory will be painful and it is often associated with fire. However, there is hope, since everyone in purgatory is assured of heaven.
Contrary to what has been said here, purgatory is scripturally (at least as scriptural as the Trinty which is not mentioned by name, but thus has an extensive basis in it).
Purgatory is the final purfication of Christian who has been saved from his sins, but still hold some worldly attachments that must b cleaned from them.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15 puts it this way: "10By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames."
What cannot be found in scripture is the misconception that purgatory is a second chance. It is not.

The maximum time a person can stay in Purgatory? Well, in the Catholic Church Purgatory is not about timing. Purgatory is the state of being where all sin and its consequences are "purged", hence the name Purgatory. Once purged and purified the person can enter Heaven. It is rather more than what I explained, but since most do not have the patience to study, I try and break it down for them. And hopefully that will entice them to study.

Pergatory is a man made doctrine that does not coincide with the Bible. Unfortunately the Catholic church has introduced alot of false doctrine that is contrary to God's word.

The issue of time is no longer considered a valid one, although Purgatory ceases to exist at the end of this age, when Jesus comes again.
As for Purgatory, St. Paul explains it better than I can:
1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be manifest. For the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire. And the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is.
1) Heaven
1Co 3:14 If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
2)Purgatory, then Heaven
1Co 3:15 If any mans work burn, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.
1Co 3:16 Know you not that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
3) Hell
1Co 3:17 But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.

St. Patrick talked of a place that he saw that was neither heaven or hell. The Catholic Church named it pergatory.
Swedenborg called it the World of Spirits and said that the most time anyone spends there is about 30 years.
It is like going to the stomach and being sorted out!
Hope this helps!

There is no such thing, it is either heaven or hell, all depending on if you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and turn from your sin. It is not about being good or bad, but if you accpect God into your life and try to live by his rules. see Roman 10:8-19

There is no Biblical basis for the existence of purgatory. It was invented by people. Maximum time is none.

Depends on how much money you have or how long your reservations are on how long you stay there. But I'm sure as soon as the ski season is over you would want to leave.
