The puppies have been to the vet and have been treated for 3 weeks. They are recovering. They contracted the ringworm (fungus) from a stray cat that came into our yard. My husband thinks we should just shoot them because no one will want them. They are Golden Retriever puppies and they are adorable. It breaks my heart that they may have to be put down.

Ringworm is NOT deadly!!!!! They WILL recover!! The bummer is that it can spread to other pets and people. IF people are informed and careful, they should be fine. You may get less for them. That is just the way breeding goes. Make sure they have no more crusty spots, and you should bathe each puppy with a Cholrahexadine shampoo that has soaked on the puppy for AT LEAST 15 min, BEFORE it leaves your house. That will help prevent spores going with the puppy. If the new homes have no other pets, it isn't as big an issue. If the people get it, Lamisil cream from the drugstore will clear it up if it is applied daily. If they have been to the vet, he/she can give you info to give to the new owners. If they are informed, it should be no big deal.
And the fungus can be in your soil. It is not always just because a cat came into your yard.
Please spay the dog. Breeding is full of these little suprises and should be left to the seasoned breeders.

And do not think that adults are usually immune. I have worked with our shelters foster program and every adult that was in contact with RW kittens developed lesions!!!!!!! The problem is when people ARE not told and happen to get a lesion. They sometimes think it is dry skin and apply lots of lotion all over the body for several days. That can SPREAD the RW all over!!!!!!
If the new owners know what to look for, that will be avoided and they will not be calling you covered with RW!!!!!!! If that happened, they could sue you for medical expenses. So, PLEASE tell the people buying the puppies!!!!!!!

Having dealt with ringworm before, I am NOT eager to bring it into the house again. I foster kittens for the shelter I work in, and have had ringworm run through my house. Make SURE the people are informed ALL about it. Kids will get it and can be banned from attending school until it is cleared up. Families with elderly or immunocompromised members can suffer even worse. It is not deadly or anything, but can make things difficult for a while!!!!!!!! Remember, you can have spores live in your house for 18 months, so spay the dog so there are no more puppies to get it and do not bring any more animals into the house for a WHILE, or you will have a new outbreak!!!!!!! I guess Renee Riley IS NOT well informed!!!!!! Ringworm is a FUNGUS not a PARASITE!!!!!!!!!! I guess all that stuff about NOT giving advice when you are clueless is preached, but not practiced!!!!!! Don't let people make you feel bad about the puppies having it. I have actually known a TOP breeder of a certain breed that had it run through her kennel of HEAVILY coated dogs!!! She moved and the soil had spores. When the dog dug in the dirt like dogs do, they got it and it spread through all of them, taking her off the show circuit for 2 years and stopping her breeding program for just as long!!!!!! It can happen. You do not expect ringworm when you have puppies. Just do the right thing and treat them and tell the buyers what has been going on. It really is not the end of the world. Had I known the kittens I was fostering had it, I caould have done something about it. If you don't know, you find out AFTER it is too late!!!!!!!!

Don't be ridiculous! Shooting the pups is not the answer! Cleaning everything in sight with bleach is the answer.

Trust me, you can give away a pup with just about anything, including parvo. I have read some of the questions here & people have paid good money for very, very sick pups from complete idiot breeders. Ringworm is nothing compared to some of that.

If the potential owners don't have any other animals or small children and are willing to monitor the situation, more power to them. I personally wouldn't do it, but I have 14 other dogs to think about and I won't introduce any potential problems.

And there are no long term complications to the pups health from having ringworm.

Give them up for adoption! Shooting them is an offense, punishable by law! It's called animal cruelty. They will recover, and I give you lots of credit for getting them treated, but some one will take them! Take them to your local ASPCA, they will find homes for them. That is ridiculous to shoot them because they have ringworm! Big deal! So, do you know how many people get pets from pet stores that are sick? Ringworm is minor compared to the number of people I've heard from lately that have pets that have Parvo! (which is usually, but not always fatal)FIND homes for them. It is your responsibility if you own the mother and did not have her spayed. If they are purebred Goldens then it was a planned breeding and no matter what happens, you are ultimately responsible for finding homes for all of them. Get the female spayed. Would you shoot your kid if he got ringworm? It's pretty minor compared to other maladies. People will STILL want them, trust me.

It's not like ringworm is like rabies! Ringworm is treatable and NOT serious. Take care of the pups, take them to the vet, and continue treatment until they are back to normal. I would get rid of the husband. He is CRAZY, no offense.

Take them to a Golden Retriever rescue, they don't kill the dogs there. I'm sure they have one nearby, just do an internet search for your town.

don't be ridicules, the rw goes away with treatment and it is as if they never had it. you don't advertise who wants a ring worm!. kill the worm keep the pups and find them forever homes. no need to mention it once its treated!. silly people!!.

don't kill them please!! Take them to your nearest animal shelter if you must but don't kill them. It's so sad to kill an animal just because no one wants them. I would love one but I am alergic to dogs. Just don't put them down.
