Well, like a few people have mentioned, one way you can approach this is to simply sit in at a local church and "get a feel" for the atmosphere. Churches are definitely on the "open door" policy. Depending on the size of the community, it's usually pretty easy to slip in unnoticed. I don't know exactly how it works at other churches, but with the Catholic ones, mass serves to bring the community together under a common set of beliefs and experiences -- it is not a "bonding" activity, though, persay. Individuals are definitely not picked out of the crowd, so it's easy to blend in.

Anyway, when you go to a particular church, I encourage you not to base your decision of religion solely upon how you feel there. I am a Catholic, but that does not mean that I like the atmosphere at every church I've ever attended. If I were at your starting point, I would first decide what religion I were interested in -- Wikipedia's as good a place as any to research a religion you think you're interested in. *Then* I would look into local churches and attend at least two before I made my decision upon whether or not this was the religion for me.

Above all, keep in mind that the religion you join should sit well with you at the end of the day. Logic and faith should support what you choose.

Have you been Baptized?
What is your denomination?
Did you go to church when you were a child?
Have you ever been told by your parents what faith you are?
If I was looking for a "Christ Based" church, and i didn't have a church already, and I didn't know my family faith roots, I'd pick two or three denomations and I'd attend services. Find one you like. Yellow pages have churches listed. Being a Catholic I'd suggest a Catholic church. The Catholic faith is the only faith that can draw a line back all the way to Jesus when he walked the earth. When he appointed Peter, the first Bishop/Pope....You will knwo when you enter the church if it si right, read up on faiths. The Bible is and excellent book to start with, Dr Scott Hahn has some fabuleous books out there, and wonder teaching tapes.....Good luck.....

Try different denominations and visit each of them a couple times - you will know which one you feel at home in. You will know which one is the best for you by the feeling you get while you are there and since you are starting fresh - read your Bible and try to understand so you don't walk into the wrong one with beliefs you don't think are right. Talk to your friends and family that goes to church - start there.
I am so glad you made the decision to go. Contact me if you need further advice, or even if you have questions about being a Christian.

I would agree with studying the bible. Study religions online would also probably work to find out a little about them. I know the bible gives some guildance on this.

1. The true Church of Christ shall bear my name. The Lord was very emphatic about the creations of churches in the bible.

2. Officers of the church shall not be compensated for their time given to the church. Many heads of churches have money give to them and food, clothing, houses to provide a living for them. This was not the intent of the Lord in his vision of the true Church of Christ.

After that I would visit some and I believe that in the bible somwhere that you would "know" in your heart when you found the right church.

Before you go about doing this you have to know that no church is perfect, because people are sinners.Go to the church were you feel you are being fed the word of God and you are moving closer to God. Some churches you go to might be false and tell you things that are not true, when you fill like this is happening go to the bible.

Well, you can look in some in your area, you know, if you pass one and go inside, check it out. If they teach the things you believe and not any crazy, weird teachings (trust me, me and my mom came across some, lol), then it could be for you. Attend a service, and if you feel something, or you feel like you're learning a lot, and becoming a better person, that's it! That's how I found my church. It made me do a complete turn around, lol. I always feel like being nice to people, and I feel so cleansed and happy when I walk out, so I hope that you feel the same way where ever you decide to reside (hey, that rhymed, lol)... Good luck!

do yourself a huge favor and be open minded enough to research religions from everywhere on the planet, (as well as off if you can arrange that). then follow your intuition to see which system really "resonates" with your soul. each religion has a number of levels, fundamentalism for the entry level types, and the esoteric approach for those who wish actual experience of " divinity" rather than merely babble and ranting about hell and damnation. if the one you choose is not to be found "in your neighborhood" then what? that would depend on how often you'd want to attend. and, it is to be noted, some practices can be done at home after receiving appropriate instruction, elsewhere, for example, as in the case of some "eastern religions". my preference would be to first find "the right one", and then work out the logistics, rather than choose one based on geographical convenience. good luck!

I recently had to find a church after moving. I used www.masstimes.org. It generally has good information, though it is occasionally out of date.
